coorsdrifter
I recently bought a Savage 300 wsm,and I'm trying to find an elk ld.so,far it doesn't like 180gr Win accubonds or the silver tips (4-5" groups),It will put the 180gr Fusions in a 1.5 group, and it'll put 150gr win power pts in an inch. All shots were on a lead sled and at 100yrds.My question is... what would the lightest grain weight bullet I can shoot and still get good penetration on elk? I'm going try and find some Remington's and Hornaday shells to try and find out what it shoots best.
colorado bob
150's would be lightest. 180's would be a much better choice. The 300 Win Mag & 180 grain Nolser Partitions is an elk classic. I would try Federal's 180 grain Nolser Partition on 300WSM. Looks like your rifle like Win Power points at least in 150's-----I would try them in 180's also.
Strut10
I believe the 180's would serve you better......especially if an odd angle or heavy bone shot were necessary. Ever consider taking up reloading??

hunterbobb
If you do start reloading, check out the Nosler Partition 180 gr. bullet. Partitions are not known for their accuracy, so you will have to keep shots to a reasonable distance. Probably under 300 yards as long as you do your job. Where they excel though is penitration. I they are like the Energizer bunny when it comes to penetration. They keep going and going. I have never had a partition that did not fully penetrate any animal I shot. Exit wounds are almost always pouring blood and leaving a blood trail a color blind person can follow. :gun2:
Wobbly_Alaska
i shoot the nosler accubonds in my 300 wm and my buddy in his 300wsm... both hold 1" groups at 200 yards with RL 22 behind them and CCI mag primers. I also buy NOSLER Ballistic tips, in 180 at half the cost of the accubond for sighting and shooting both have the same BC and a ballistic tip as a back up makes a hard hit. the bull in my avatar met the accubond on a front quartering shot and dropped in his tracks as did the years previous moose. the bears i hit with them also enough damage to put them down fast. coles
I have a remington sps stainless 300WSM and it loves Federal Premium 180gr Accubonds. Ive only shot one elk with it but it was a cow that was 15-18 years olds. The shot was about 300 yards and the bullet hit her high behind the front leg and she got about half way through her first step and was crumpled on the way to the ground. If i were you, I would go 180s for elk just like everyone is saying. Just the added security of a heavier bullet for odd angles and tough elk. But stick with a premium bullet and you will be fine. silvertip_co
A 165gr or 180gr otto work fine.
