So this weekend was a bust. Saturday morning brought pouring rain and then at 8am I had to leave with my dad to go to an auction. I had to get a mower for all this lawn I might get with the house I'm purchasing. Sunday morning brought 30mph winds the whole morning. I used the windy conditions to still hunt around the whole place and glassed the open fields when I came to them. I saw all the same hens in there usual nesting areas. Woodchucks weren't even out of there holes. The hens didn't stay out in the open long either. Better luck next weekend, maybe. It's going to be busy though so I don't know if I'll be able to get much hunting in, especially when we can only hunt until noon.

Well guys, it looks like I struck out this season. Called in two nice toms for some friends of mine, and they were able to seal the deal. I only could manage to go for myself about four times. Even though I wasn't able to get on one myself it was still a lot of fun. The birds were hammering just about every morning, but I guess the neighbors pasture was just a little greener than ours.

  • 2 weeks later...

The turkey woods is dead quiet and action is non-existent. I believe things are to the point where if I finally find or hear one gobbler, I'll find a group of them. I've seen dozens of hens every weekend and the season isn't over with. I'll find those thunderchickens if it just about kills me! lol I can't believe that I haven't seen a single one yet!

That's a Dandy of a bird Fender!! Congrads!!

dbHunter, Man that sucks! Things were bad around here for the first several days, but then all of a sudden it started clicking. Hopefully that'll happen in your neck of the woods too! How much longer is season in for?

And, I cannot get Waterfowlers pics up. :( He's tried sending them to me, but they won't even show in the e-mail. Not sure if its my computer or what the problem is, but maybe he can try e-mailing one of you guys and see if it works?

I'll send a PM and see if I can post them. The season here is until the end of May, so I pretty much have just this weekend and that's it. Then in NY we can only hunt until noon every day. I think I may go to another farm. There doesn't seem to be many toms on my parent's farm right now. Hopefully I'll have some luck this weekend. We'll see. The turkeys definitely aren't vocal at all. So it will probably be more of a spot and stalk or run and gun.

So I scouted my parent's farm this season and only one good tom was there and he's been in this one area all season. The problem was my uncle and cousin were after their first turkey, so I let them hunt that area. Well they had missed opportunities on him a few times and finally through in the towel. Well I then went after him and it seemed he'd disappeared! Well I found out why tonight. I talked with my brother and he said that he gave a buddy of his permission to hunt the farm. During the week while I was at work, the buddy came up and hunted that area and killed the tom, which is why I couldn't find him. The only specifics I got was that it had a 10" beard. In the morning I think I'm headed to another farm. I haven't scouted it at all, but I'm going to give it a shot. Maybe I'll get lucky with it being my last weekend to hunt. It's calling for a few showers so I'll pack the rain gear.

I hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend!

I'm eating my tag!

Well it looks like I'll be eating my two spring turkey tags. Saturday morning I went to another farm that I didn't really have time to scout at all. I managed to find some nested hens, as usual. However, I did get the drop on a couple jakes. If only they were a little bigger! Sunday morning I was back at my parent's farm and late morning I found a tom. He was out in the newly seeded field with a bunch of hens. Well I managed to call all the turkeys in at once with the tom slowly in tow. Before he got within range, one of the hens must have saw something they didn't like. They all suddenly started to run off and the tom was still standing there way of range. After they were all pretty far off he finally decided he should run too and follow them. Wasn't very big but a tom and one i would've busted. that's hunting i guess.

This year I had the worst luck I know. Like I said it's what makes it hunting. I tried to get out as much as I could, but the birds started their routine early this year.

I agree. It was tough and the vibe I got from people hunting in our state and surrounding ones felt the same thing. I'm optomistic that there will be plenty of toms next year that didn't get harvested this year. Bring on the right "time" and it could be hot hunting next year!

Waterfowler is having trouble posting his information can anyone help him? Maybe send him a p.m. He got a nice tom this year and wants to help his team out. Thanks Jesse

I think I PM'd him and never got a response back. I'll try and help if he sends me the pictures. I'll send him another PM.
