Perfect hunting bow set-up?

I thought this would be fun. Lets not turn this into a brand bashing thread as I think it will be exciting what everyones idea of the perfect hunting bow set-up is. I mean an all around deadly accurate hunting/ 3-D target bow. Obviously we are not walking through the woods with a 35lb bright blue target bow with a 4ft stabilizer, so lets talk about set-ups and accuracy expectations.

Here is my set-up

2006 Mathews Switchback XT set at 70lb draw weight

G-5 3/16" meta peep (NO peep tubing)

G-5 Optix LE sight

Whisker Biscuit rest

55/75 Gold Tip XT Hunter 28.5" arrows

Onestringer 7" wraps

Gateway 4" left helical feathers

100 gr field points

100 gr Rocky Mountain Snyper XP3 (discontinued)

I have my arrows all with-in range and have adjusted my front of center within acceptable range as according to GT specs.

Here is the reasons for my selection

My bow because I shot the Mathews and fell in love with it after being a strictly PSE guy for over 2 decades.

I shoot a G-5 meta peep because of the weight and I like the blue halo effect that contrasts against my sight pin hood on my G-5 Optix sight.

I chose the G5 sight because I liked it and I like the level on it, it adds to my correct form.

I shoot the whisker biscuit as I like to hunt from treestands as well as still hunt. I like to know that at whatever angle I am at, or if I am sneaking through the woods, my arrow is securely on the rest and ready to go.

The Gold Tips are personal choice, I have had good luck with them and really like the way they perform.

Onestringer wraps to make the arrows more visible, and "mine" :paint:.

I shoot gateways feathers just because I always have... hate that they are left wing though, and this is the one part of my set-up I want to change.

I shoot the 100gr points for the with-in range specs of my arrows, and shoot mechanicals because they fly very close to what my field points do.

I am looking for some advice on what to switch to for fletching set-up. I have a Bitzenberger and it currently is set for left helical which I want to change. I get tired of my field points loosening. I also thought about vanes. I do not have a ton of wear on my fletchings from the whisker biscuit, but after being shot 50 times, I definitely have some. Luckily I replace my own.

Help me with my arrow fletching set-up... give me your constructive critisism. Lets not make this brand bashing though, and get it locked.

Thanks

You don't have to shoot a target bow for consistancy. I shoot my turbohawk with 12" stabilizer and can hit a 6 inch circle at 60 I would say 95% of the time.

Fletchings I would get a straight jig and shoot blazers or something comparible. The blazers do a good job steering broadheads and will hold up extremely well thru the wb

I'm using a:

G-5 Primal set@ 60#

G-5 Meta peep

Limbsaver 5 pin sight (30,40,50,60,70)

PSE X-Weave 200's w/ Blazers

G-5 Montec 100 grain

Trophy Taker Shakey Hunter rest

Here's why I like it. It was easy to tune to shoot broadheads out to my furthest pin which is 70 yards. Broadheads and field points shoot to the same point of impact. It's extremely light and it's was accurate enough to outshoot everyone in hunter class at the western states championship here last weekend, in a downpour no less.

That's for deer. I'll use PSE X-Weave 300's for elk and draw 70 # .

Mark

P.S. I have a paint pen that I use to mark things and I found that if I put a small amount on the threads of the field tips it keeps them in but not permanently.

Working on it! I'll post again when then accessories come in.

Gander Mountain TechHunter Elite: 60lb draw weight

Limbsaver solid limb Limbsavers

Limbsaver 4-1/2" S-Coil Stabilizer

Limbsaver String Leeches

G5 Meta Peep

TruGlo Tru-Site Xtreme 5-pin sight

QAD UltraRest Pro HD drop-away rest

Alpine Soft-loc 5 arrow quiver

29" Goldtip 5575 Expedition Hunter carbon arrows

Rage 100gr 2-blade expandable broadheads

Scott Little Goose release

...a couple years ago I was looking at all the top bows and tried the TechHunter Elite just for the heck of it. It blew me away with standard features and performance; awesome shootability that's vibration free, buttery smooth draw, draw post for concrete backwall consistency, roller guard style cable guard, STS string tamer, and single cam IBO of 320fps is respectable.

Limbsaver products are proven to kill the minimal noise and vibration that's left.

G5 Meta peep increases string speed and as said the blue contrasts with sight windows for more accuracy.

TruGlo 5-pin sight comes with enough bright pins to reach out there and the light makes them even brighter. The glo ring on the sight window and bubble level help with accuracy when aiming.

QAD drop away rest gets you the most speed and forgiveness while maintaining 360 degree arrow containment in a locked upright position to make that shot count.

Soft-loc 5 arrow quiver comes on and off stealthy and the rubber interface adds to vibration dampening if any is even still needed. The foam is removable and it grabs an arrow in two spots to hold them firm while stalking; perfect for mechanicals.

Goldtip arrows and even the stock vanes seem to be very durable.

Rage 2-blade heads yield awesome terminal performance; 3" dia hole through the animal every time!

Scott Little Goose has lots of adjustments and can be adjusted down to fit women and kids. It also has a buckle for consistency. ....this is what I'm working on. The rest and peep are left and in the works.

My hunting setup is nice enough I think. Fast enough, deadly quiet, and comfortable in your hand.

2010 ( bought in 09, serial number shows its a 10? ) Hoyt Turbohawk

60-70 XTR Cam n Halfs

QAD Rest

Bone Collector 1200 Series Pin sight w/green light. Top two pins are .19s, bottom two are .10s

I still high recommend a wrapped Hunter Hoggit from Spott Hogg though. The adjustments are easier, and I can't touch my pins with the BC. But for a 90$ it works for hunting, just not 3D.

Arrows-I'm shooting 340 series Easton Epics. For 100$ arrows, these things fly great and at TOUGH! They do rival Maximas in my opinion and are 40$ less a dozen.

Agree with Hutch, blazers are the way to go. They've been proven to increase broadhead accuracy.

I shoot an octane 12 inch stabilizer. Stabilizers are one thing I am not sold on really. In my opinion buy ya the cheapest one you can get. I can't tell any difference in them unless I have my 30inch doinker on my target bow.

Release wise, I shoot a Scott Lil Goose.

I'm not as accurate with this setup as I am with my target rig, but I also don't shoot this setup nearly as much either. For a 32 ATA bow, it is very good and for about 66% the cost of the rest of the high end bows made by Hoyt, Mathews, Bowtech, PSE, or Elite.

08 elite GTO @ 73lbs

whisker biscuit rest

sword twilight hunter micro sight

alpine soft loc quiver

g5 meta peep

stabilizer is a old silicone filled x ring( cant seem to find one that does a better job)

victory arrows fletched with 4 mini blazers @ 90 deg

broadheads?? probly gonna try razor tricks this year, have shot rage 2 blades for the last 2 yrs and am not very happy with them. they kill deer just fine but for the money they are too fragile

Honestly I dont think there is a perfect set up.

the best set up is the one you are familiar with and have confidence in. too many great archery products out there.

Amen............and in the hands of the right tuner alot of bows people hated they would fall in love with. A twish here and a twist there and a bow can really come to life.

I agree with you 100%. Guess I wasn't asking for myself... I HAVE the perfect set-up.. mine is the perfect one...for ME. I just thought it would be fun to see what everyone is doing. I do however have to urge to tweak my arrow set-up a bit. Nothing as far as grain weight changes... just fletching set-up

I'm shooting a 60 lb. Mission Journey. It has a Trophy ridge drop away and sight, G5 peep, S-coil stabilizer, and I'm shooting aluminum 2219's.

When i'm looking for a new bow I generally narrow down my search by specs. I like a A to A between 31" and 34" and a brace height over 7", and weight under 4 lbs.. Then I shoot a few at the bow shop, pick out one I like, then go on A.T. and buy one that's a few months old.

I would like to dump the drop away in favor of a whisker biscuit and replace the vertical pin TR sight with an Extreme before next bow season.
