Turkeygirl
Trying not to get to worked up, dealing with this newj ob is hard enough on me. Went to get my teeth cleaned this AM...have had great teeth for the last couple years, no problems. Well the lady says the one tooth is a concern to her, the color. She tells the dentist, takes an x-ray...I have a freaking abcess at the base of the roots of the one tooth I have a filling in!! So essentially the tooth is dead. The dentist comesi n and looks and tells me my options. Well with my current health insurance, Medicaid, he can only extract the tooth. He tells me there are some places, through some Act, that can do a root canal, therefore I can keep the tooth, and medicaid would pay. Thing is with this job, I'll probably be off medicaid soon anyway. So I'm upset to say the least, never had a root canal, but it's one more hassle. Going to wait till my mom gets home to talk to her before I call around to see who can do it and will pay for it. Otherwise it's like $1000 they told me. Anyone had a root canal done? How bad or not bad was it? Just when I was happy to be off for 2 days...now I feel like I'm back to the bottom of the hill....
Tominator
I've had 2 done. They are a little expensive, but I would think you could afford it now that you're working. They are a little painful, not bad. Compared to chest surgery, it's a breeze.
RangerClay
They are a little painful, not bad. Compared to chest surgery, it's a breeze. Yeppers! Stock up on pain killers. Is it a front tooth? If not just pull it and be done with it. I've had 4 teeth pulled over the years and you cannot tell they are gone now.
c_lou
I had a root canal when I was 10, it's more uncomfortable than painful.
redkneck
There ya go Ruth, they're not painful, just extremely uncomfortable! Don't you feel a lot better? Hate to hear that, things will look up soon though.
Shaun_300
Haven't had a root canal done but I have had 4 teeth pulled before I got my braces on back in my early teen years. Didn't hurt at all! All you could feel was the push from the dentist's tool. It's not like he just takes a pair of pliers and yanks on it. They push on it until it is really loose and pull very gently with pliers and it pops right out. That's the route I'd go if it was one of the back teeth. If it was a front tooth I'd opt for a root canal.
Turkeygirl
Yeah, it's a back tooth...like 3rd from the last molar....Wouldn't I have a giant gap then if it was pulled? Or do the teeth kind of fill in the space or something? Part of me thinks pulling it then it'd be done with...I had 2 pulled actually when I had to get my braces...At least the health insurance would pay for it,lol. I dunno, waiting to talk with mom about it when she gets home... Any body else have thoughts?
OJR
I had a root canal done and didn't take anything when they did it. Not bad! Have it pulled and when you get some $$$$ have a partial made to fill the gap! Please don't take any time off from work, we need the taxes! LOL! Good luck with whatever direction you go! Don't know if I'd want a big ol' gap coming at me with narcotics. j/k
Turkeygirl
I'll probably end up going with the root canal way, but either way, a hastle...
ruttinbuc
Yes, if all the other teeth are in good shape go with the root canal. It is a hassle, but realize the consequences:

The_Kat
Ruth save your money and get your tooth pulled. I just had the same exact tooth pulled, one on top and one on bottom because they died from a punch I took back in college. You can't even tell when I smile as big as I can, and you won't miss them trust me. I forget they aren't there til I feel it with my tongue. Jenn has had two root canals and they were over 400$ with insurance. But she said they didn't hurt at all.
Rhino
Root canal Ruth. I've had 3 of them so far. No real pain to speak of after they deaden the area with a shot. Whenever there's an option to save a tooth...save it. You never know when the time will come where giving one up is the only option. I had to have the back molar (lower left side) extracted about 8 years ago. Since then I favor chewing on the opposite side. Still feels wierd missing that molar. Turkeygirl
Yeah, probably will go with the root canal. Talked to my mom and she's going to give the guy she goes to a call and I'll probably go in there, see what he says...
Hunt or be Hunted
I would go with getting the tooth pulled. I had 2 pulled on my left bottom side, and I can't even tell I don't have them......Shoot even one grew back lol. I have never had a root canal so I don't know bout that. But do whatever you want, just my say lol.

Talked to my mom and she's going to give the guy she goes to a call and I'll probably go in there, see what he says... I'll bet if you talk to that dentist, he might even allow you to finance it until you get your first pay. Another option might be to wait and see what happens. You might be able to hold off on the root canal until you get your insurance through work. I think most dentists would recommend saving the tooth if you can because of potential problems later down the line with bite, and wear. dbHunterNY
Hey Ruth sorry to hear about the tooth issues. I've probably got to get my wisdom teeth out, because I haven't yet. They bother me now and then. I don't have insurance though. It's like $500 a tooth! lol So, figuritively, I feel your pain. Although, if you go out scouting some more and find a giant multi-bearded thunder chicken to put our team on top, you'd forget about the tooth. tedicast
I had a root canal last January. The first part of it where they drill and remove everything took about an hour and a half. I was in al ittle pain afterwards, but worked a full day. It wasn't that bad. I can't remember how long the second part took, butto me the worst part was being in the chair with my mouth propped open for so long. the pain was bearable. Ok, I guess I should say the worst part was the price. I have no dental insurance, and the whole procedure cost me $2400. Now that really hurt!!!
