Ok so I got bit by my friends dog last night. Austrialian Shepard. It bit me on the leg right about my right knee. OK so I went to the doctor, got put on antibiotics and had a tetnaus shot, cleaned and bandaged up. Ok well my friend had told me the dog was up to date on all his shots. Out of my own curiosity I called the local vets and the last time the dog had had his shots was in 07. Granted she could have taken the dog to another vet in a different town or given him the shots herself. I cannot get a hold of the friend to find out. Also I called my doctor back with this new info on the dog. Still waiting on a return call. I have been told that I only have a period of a few days to get the $10,000 shot if the dog does have rabies. Is this true?

Also, I cannot call my friend because she has broke her cell and has not gotten another phone. She came by my house last night to check on me. I havent figured out if she was concerned or thought I was going to sue or not lol. Oh the dog bite me while I was over at her house trying to leave a note in the door for her to call me. The dog was just protecting the property so I cant fault the dog there.

I'd imagine if it is a house hold pet and isn't showing signs of being rabid then it isn't. They only way your gonna know is if the kill the dog, or at least thats how it used to be done. They have to kill em, and test the brain. I've been bit by a dog twice and neither were rabid. Both were protecting their homes just as this dog was.

If you start howling at the moon though.....call 911.

If your concerned about it then I'd have the dog tested. It's gonna cause a huge riff with your friend, but your health is more important than a dog. There may be new ways of testing rabies now, I don't know if they still kill them.

P.S. The fever is more than likely from your tetanus shot.

Questions & Answers

What causes rabies?

Rabies is caused by a virus. The virus invades the central nervous system and disrupts its functioning.

How does rabies spread?

The rabies virus is transmitted in the saliva of infected animals. People usually become infected with the virus by being bitten by an infected animal, but any contact with the saliva of an infected animal (alive or dead) can potentially lead to infection if the person has an opening in the skin or the saliva gets into their eyes, nose, or mouth. You cannot get rabies from the blood, urine, or feces of a rabid animal, or from just touching or petting an animal.

How long does it take to show signs of rabies after being exposed?

For rabies, the incubation period is more variable than with other infections. The incubation period in humans is usually several weeks to months, but ranges from days to years.

What are the symptoms of rabies?

The rabies virus attacks the nervous system (brain and spinal cord). The first symptoms of rabies are similar to a flu-like illness--fever, headache, and general discomfort. Within days, the disease can progress to symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, agitation, abnormal behavior, delirium, and hallucinations. Once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. Therefore, any person who has been bitten, scratched, or somehow exposed to the saliva of a potentially rabid animal should see a physician as soon as possible for postexposure treatment.

How serious is rabies?

Rabies is an extremely painful and deadly disease. As mentioned above, if prompt and appropriate post-exposure treatment is not received, the disease is fatal. Each year rabies kills approximately 50,000 people around the world. Deaths from rabies are rare in the United States because of the wide availability of rabies vaccine and rabies immune globulin.

What should I do if a neighborhood dog bites my child?

Rabies is not common in dogs, cats, ferrets, and livestock in the United States because most are vaccinated against rabies. However, you should get medical attention for any animal bite. If the pet appeared healthy at the time your child was bitten, it can be confined for 10 days and observed; no anti-rabies treatment need be given to your child. If the pet appeared ill at the time it bit your child, it should be evaluatedby a veterinarian for signs of rabies.Your physician will be able to give you more specific advice for your situation.

So apparently they'll just observe the pooch.

Yes you can fault the dog. What if one of your children wandered into the yard. This dog should have been inside.

Contact your local Dog Warden immediately. Your dog bite your be put on record in case this dog bites again.

Your friend is concerned because the dog has NOT had its shots and will probably be put down.

You really need to start taking some action here to protect yourself. Friend or not.

if you are seriously having that much drainage from the wound, i would definitely have concern of infection. Whether its rabies related or not is beyond me...but it sounds like you do have an infection bruing in there...Get it taken care of ASAP!!! As far as the shots, they have one year and three year rabies shots, and since the local vet said it was vaccinated in 07, it could have possibly gotten the 3 year shot which would mean you might be clear of rabies. However, if that dog only had a one year shot, you might be in trouble. In IL, all dogs that have had shots are registered with the county. Call the county health dept. and see if and what shots this dog received in 07...then go sit on your friends front porch and wait for her to get home and get some answers!

good luck, and i hope its not serious...

Negative on the porch! I was trying to get to the porch when I got bit.

Thats a great observation.....my bad.....then sit in your truck or car and just wait til she gets home i guess...either way, you need to have a talk with your friend so you know which route to take...

Also, in IL, if someone reports a dog bite, the doggy has to go to doggy jail for 10 days....its like the SCU (solitary confinement unit).

Yup that would be the 10 day observation mentioned in the article I pasted above. My money is on your ok as far as rabies go, but animal bites can leave some nasty infections. You've been given treatment by your doctor, plus it's the day after the bite, so you should be good to go as far as infection. Your gonna have swelling and drainage. You have a deep puncture wound...it's all normal. Have the dog confined and observed to ease your mind. And take it easy on your leg for a day or two.

If it's any consolation...I got bit right on the butt once...long ago when we first moved in. The idot neighbor's dogs attacked our vet's (another neighbor) dog, I threw rocks and stones at them and the one came up where I couldn't see and nailed me on the butt...little puncture. Andy went to see if the dog had it's latest shots, the guy said yeah but the guy is an idiot, should have asked to see proof. I healed up fine, we didn't go any further because this is the type of neighbor that involves repercussions....

I think Kat summed it up fine. Is this dog one that is in the house alot? Is there alot of wildlife around? Does the dog roam?

I got bit when I lived in Vermont 15 years ago. It was during a time when half the raccons they live trapped for a rabies study had rabies. They quaranteened the dog for 10 days and treated my wounds. After 10 days they said the dog was rabies free.

File a police report. The dog that bit me had bit someone before and after 2 times they see a pattern developing and put the dog down for public safety. The wound was not fun either. They are full of filth, lots of briusing and tearing and heal slowly. God bless.

Most Rabies vaccinations are good for 3 years. You'll be fine!

If the shots are not current then the dog would be required to go in a 10 Day Rabies Observation at the local animal shelter or a vet clinic. If no signs of Rabies are noted during the 10 day period then you will be fine. If any neurological signs are seen then the dog will be put down and the brain tested for rabies. If the brain comes back positive for rabies then you will need to be given the rabies treatment.
