Orion_70
I didn't get pics of the 1st a week ago, it was a pygmy rattler I stepped on after kicking over a log. Thankfully it was still cold and it wasn't moving very fast. I dispatched that one with a stick I grabbed. This one (copperhead) fell out while shoveling some mulch for the garden this weekend.. it met my shovel .. Spring is here Edited March 9, 2010 by Orion_70
Tominator
That's a pretty snake. You call copperheads, pygmy rattlers?
Guest TennesseeTurkey
Im not too sure thats a copperhead, Ive killed a few turkey hunting in MS and that looks a little too red to be a copperhead, but it is early in the year..... interesting.... Tominator
I'm not all that good with snake ID, but that doesn't look like a copperhead to me. Have to agree with Will, that's a corn snake. Shame.
woolybear
Looks more like a milk snake to me. Need to see the head better.
The_Kat
We have copperheads all over here and that is NOT a copperhead. If it were, itd be one of the longest Ive ever seen. I'm with will, thats a rat snake. The head isn't that of a viper. Pygmy rattlers are no joke! I hate them thangs!
Orion_70
Upon further investigation, it appears you may be correct and it was a corn snake.. Woops, I hate to kill any non venomous snake, but when it lands between my feet, I'm not going to discriminate Edited March 9, 2010 by Orion_70
wtnhunt
Would have to agree with Will, that does not look like a copperhead, we see plenty of them around here. Heads on copperheads are typically more burnt orangish and more squared, not so round. Far as the time of the year, I have seen cottonmouths out in January here. Don't usually see copperheads quite that early, but not uncommon at all to see the snakes moving around here in March.

Those long black snakes are good to have around when it comes to the venomous snakes, racers and indigos will kill and eat venomous snakes. I try my best to avoid hitting them when mowing. bfletch7441
I don't blame you for killing it. In the woods is one thing, but in my yard snakes don't stand much of a chance. Ben
