Diamond Archer 01
I am fairly new to turkey calling and I was wondering if any of you guys could give me a few pointers. I know how to yelp and pur alright but I was wondering if there are any tips or tricks to make your calling sound a little better. Any input will be appreciated. Nut
Yea practice practice practice. Learn how to make all the calls. There are a few places that have the sound(I forget where but all u do is a google search). This is only the start you know. You have to learn when and where to what type of calling is needed. That mainly comes with experience.

What I do is go on you tube and find footage of hen turkeys and try to mimic them in the way they call. Then practice, practice. Good luck:)

Ravin R10 man
try to sound exactly what the hens sound like..I just mimmic them when Im out there..good to have several different calls to sound like multiple hens too...
Rhino
Good to have several different strikers too. Different strikers will produce different pitch calls from the same slate.
Ethan Givan
Be careful the way you hold it. Dont lay it flat in your hand where the bottom of the pot is laying on your palm. This muffles the sound. Hold it on the sides with just your finger tips. Also dont lay your hand with the striker on the slate surface. Oils from your skin will soak into the slate and distort the sound.
Diamond Archer 01
Thanks for all of the input guys. I have one question tho. When you guys call do you bring the striker towards you or away from you?
Ethan Givan
Thanks for all of the input guys. I have one question tho. When you guys call do you bring the striker towards you or away from you? I do small counter-clockwise circles for yelps, and I pull it towards me for purrs and clucks. Leo
For purrs and clucks try gripping the striker 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" from the end That extra free length on the striker really helps produce the best sounding purrs.

The Kid
hold the striker high up on the stick when purring to get more vibration when you yelp hold it lower so you only get one smooth sound
Leo
Another good thing to practice is changing pitch with the call by changing how hard you are squeezing the striker. The harder you squeeze that striker the higher the pitch. To get a good Kee Kee it almost feels like you are gonna pinch that striker in half. You actually don't have to vary pressure on the call to change pitch. I recommend varying pressure only to vary volume and controlling pitch by how hard you squeeze the striker. GWSmith
Practice while your not looking at the call and get yourself ready...just like in the field...especially the Gloves! The call does not have to be perfect just do your best effort learning. Also practice putting the call away or setting it down too without looking. ..it's those little things that freak you out at the last second and make you mess up the shot, or spook off the bird, that will haunt you.
