coolshooter
I live in Kansas City Missouri. I am wanting to purchase some hunting land, primarily for deer and turkey. My budget limits me to about 80 or 100 acres. Given the potential land size, wanted some advice on the the kind of land the pro staff might suggest. If one were to purchase 100 acres, would you suggest a mix of crop fields and timber, and what percent mix. For example. 60 acres timber and 40 acres field or crop? Another area I am considering is mainly timber and is surrounded by large areas of timber. It has a small open area for food plots. I am planning on putting food plots in, but wanted to know what your thoughts would be if you could only purchase a limited acreage area. would you opt for the agricultural area with timber and field mix with surrounding area fairly similar. Or would you opt for a large and mostly timbered area with alot of timber surrounding it? Any advice appreciated! Thanks!
Texan_Til_I_Die
With that size acreage, so much of your hunting success or lack thereof will depend on your neighbor's actions and activities. Find out who your neighbors will be and what they like to do on their property (hunt, camp, ride 4wheelers, feed the cows every morning at 7:00 am, etc). wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. I am not a pro staffer, but would have to agree with the advice above. Do as much research as you can on the surrounding properties and on what kind of hunting and animals are coming from those properties. Deer are edge animals, personally if it were me and the neighbors of both properties were practicing quality deer management I would likely be more inclined to purchase the property that is a mix. stevebeilgard
you've gotten some good advice so far, especially on the neighbors. if you purchase wooded land, you may be able to recapture some of your investment by having a lumber company buy your timber, thus clearing the land. then, allow a farmer to share crop it, producing yearly income and a crop to hunt over. just some more thoughts.
