Wobbly_Alaska
seems to be a lot of interest in shed hunting.. i stumble across them in the fall out hunting, but don't drag them home, kids will leave them at camp but thats where they stay... i have a stack of moose and caribou antlers out behind the greenhouse from those i am required to haul out per the regs... so my question is.... WHAT do you do with them? collection? is there a market for them? i know that bundles of moose antler will go at auction for about $8.00 a lb here for carvers... or is it just an excuse to get out in the woods? curious is all... thanks Vince
Muleyman
Well alot of the time it s somewhat to study and learn more about the deer and it is alot more rewording when u shoot a deer to have the sheds from it. It just cool to see how much he has grown since the past seasons. You dont see very many people who sell them. I just keep them in boxes in my shed.I dont have that many yet but I sure hope that shed will be big enough to hold all of them.lol.
Prairiepredator
I just like collecting them...I really have nothing to do with them, I think they are just cool to look at. Muleyman is right too...it is cool to have the sheds from a deer you shot too, even though I have not found any from any deer that I have shot yet. Shed hunting is also a nice way to get in the outdoors and have some fun. Some people don't see the thrill in finding a shed but I really enjoy it. Fascination with how they grow I guess.
Wobbly_Alaska
you guys will have to forgive the questions as i have never seen whitetail or mule deer. but HOW do you know it is the same deer every year? i could not pick a moose out year after year, but then they move around to much and kind of land where they do... toddyboman
Why I shed hunt......great exercise, great way to scout my hunting ground to learn more about my deer heard, 2nd best way to get my hands on the bucks (antlers at least) that I passed or the ones I couldn't get a crack at and finally something fun to do with my kids. I too simple collect the sheds. I have an old wagon wheel chandelier that I fasten them too to make my own deer antler chandelier. The sets or bigger sheds I have make for neat decorations in my man cave :D Bucks generally carry the same traits so often you can match sheds from year to year and have a good idea if its the same deer or at least the same genetics. I had the buck in my avatar on my hunting land during the 2005 season... here is his one of his sheds...Found Jan 06 And to the best of my knowledge in summer of 2006 he died ....road kill I am sure I have other examples just this happens to be the only one I have rights now......on this computer
Turkeygirl
I have been in an arranged pile so to speak in my room...love to look at them, once in a while pick them up and admire their beauty...It's one of the neatest parts of God's wild creation...It's just one of those things...fascination... Muleyman
Well sometimes it can be hard to tell if it is the same deer. But lots of the time u can just tell. It would have grown of course but it will kinda have the same shape and you know.... but ya it can be difficult to tell.
jenbickel
Fascination is definitely most of it! Its also having an excuse to get out into the woods for some alone time or quality time with others. My 4 year old daughter loves to go out with me and asks me to go out a lot. Which I think is a lot better than her sitting at the house watching tv. It's a great work out and when you find horns it is really such a great feeling! Sometimes we sell them and certain ones we keep. It is fun to be able to just look at them.
buckee
I make the odd project out of them, plus I'm trying to fill a large aquarium with them, for a coffee table. And, it's a great excuse to get out in the woods, even though it tires me out.

camoman1
I like the challenge of finding them. And it gets me out of the house and in the woods. I am not good at finding them at all LOL, I pretty much have to literally trip on them to find them. I think the number of deer Ive taken is more than the number of sheds Ive ever found haha!! But, I still go out and try my best to find some!
