m gardner
These are all mass produced firearms so they may or may not be exceptionally accurate but certainly acceptably accurate, the exception not being the rule. I'd bet on the Savage or Remington being the most accurate of the bunch. You may stumble on a real tackdriver too. Mark
DKA
Have some Remington SPS Rifles and all are very accurate out of the box. Have a 308 and it is very accurate with 165 Gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets. Bought a Marlin XS7 243 some time ago and it is also accurate. I really like the SPS rifles. wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Lot of options, kind of partial to model 700's, don't think you could go wrong with a savage model 10 either.
hunterbobb
No doubt in my mind. If it was me I would go with the Remington 700 CDL. It is probably the most attractive production rifle on the market. It is a rifle you can feel proud to be using. I own ten model 700's in different calibers and configurations and all of them will shoot very close to 1" groups or smaller right out of the box. Put a little work into them like a trigger job. (which you might not even need anymore if it has the new X trigger.) and they are tack drivers. My 270 which has had a lot of custom work will shoot .25" groups on a regular basis. If 308 or 30-06 were my only choices I think I would go for the 308. However, my first choice would be a 270. :gun2:
elkoholic
If you are just going to hunt deer sized game with it you may want to consider the 7mm-08. For some reason there is something mystical about the knock down power of the 7mm caliber. The rifle I would pick would be the 700 SPS in Realtree camo, and do not skimp on the scope. Gotta agree with that. The 7mm-08 just literally smacks. I've hunted with alot of differant calibers but this round really flattens 'em out
Texan_Til_I_Die
Weatherby Vanguard. $400 retail and they're guaranteed to shoot MOA out of the box. Of those two calibers, I'd probably go with the .308 unless you think you might step up to larger game like elk or moose, in which case I'd recommend getting the 30-06. dbHunterNY
don't overlook the 60 degree bolt throw and accutrigger (or a really good trigger) that some of those have. these things alone i have on some of my guns and i love both. if you could only give me a rifle with both, i'll buy it without any hesitation. bdunn
what do yall think about a 7mm rem mag?
dbHunterNY
it's a do all caliber that can be used for anything in north america. some don't shoot mags well because they don't like the kick. i don't know what you shoot and how much you flinch. if you're just getting it to hunt deer sized game it's more than enough. something anywhere between a 270 to 30-06 will work fine too with less kick. if you get a mag remember ammo will be more $$, if you buy it off the shelf. the t/c, and brownings will have a 60 degree bolt i mentioned. the savage in my opinion has the accu-trigger which i think it awesome. jdeere
I had a 7mm08 and was very happy with it. Like the others say "There is something about the round that puts them down fast" I think faster than the 270, I also like the 270. I have 2 A-bolts, I wanted a X-bolt but got tired of waiting. My fav. is the old Winchester M 70. I have a new A-bolt SS hunter 300wsm and didnt even get it out this year. I had a model seven and the triger was about 6 lbs to much. DropTine49
Browning X-Bolt!, If you wanna go a little cheaper the Weatherby Vanguard is an excellent rifle as well in any caliber.
dbHunterNY
I have a Browning ABolt II stainless in 30-06 and adjusted the trigger. I'm not sure, but I think the X-Bolt has the same feature. Under the trigger guard is a small set-screw to adjust trigger pull. I turned mine down to just under 3lbs maybe and ended up with a light, crisp trigger. I'd take it to a gunshop though and have it done. The head to the screw is pretty small and very very soft; strips very easily.
2labs
Check out the Marlin XL & XS 7s they may be cheep but will shoot bullet for bullet with any High cost rifle out there!! I in have a XL 7 in 30-06 and it shoots as good as or better than my buddies Rem 700 in the same caliber. Great rifle for $300.00, and you said you have a scope so you are half way there. Good luck with whatever you buy, just show some pics!!
