RTF
RTF got into it this year. I tapped last week during that rapid mild weather that came in . Got a good run, but now am shut off until who knows when. I did however boil down what I had and it's sooooooooo good ! Now I am bummed, because i think my taps will dry out before the next run
Guest Finn
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? My Dad makes about 75 gallons a year. Me and the kids head up to help tap every spring. I can't eat store syrup anymore.
Tominator
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? I wish I could. I have one black maple on my property, the rest of my maples are reds and silvers. The black is only about 4" in diameter, and is marginal for sugar content anyway. There's a nearby little woods that has some sugar maples in it that I've considered tapping, but never have--it sure is good stuff though. I remember one day in my undergrad years I was walking home from class one day and noticed an icicle coming out of the end of a broken branch, then I noticed it was a sugar maple. I broke the icicle off, took it home and boiled it down. I got about 1 oz of syrup, and man, was it good.

Turkeygirl
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? We've done maple syrup like twice and haven't done it for a while because (1) Andy is lazy and (2) westill have alot left. Usually te first run of the year is best and the lighter the color, the better the quality. Sure beats the store stuff (no offense) lol
VermontHunter
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? Usually my brother suckers me into helping him with his setup and boiling, in total last harvest we boiled down over 600 gallons of various grades in which some of you got to sample, and by the way how was it ?? LOL... But will tell you it's not easy work, and isn't something I look forward to, but hey I get free syrup and he is my brother...
lil hunter
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? I've never done it, but theres a park here that takes a buncha people one day a year our tapping for syrup, then they all come back and eat pancakes. They give you the choice to eat real maple syrup, or the store-bought stuff. I would like to go to that sometime, but I probably won't for a few more years. MrWiggely
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? I tap our trees every year. Im not too worried about the taps drying up. The weather going from cold to warm is great. I have about 6 gallons of sap to cook down right now, probably should get too it tomorrow. VTbowman
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? The guy who neighbors my hunting property taps my trees. I get a bit of cash out of it and a bunch of free syrup too. I always say I want to help him out to see exactly how its done but I always seem to miss it with work and family obligations. Its nice to pour a bunch of maple syrup over my pan cakes knowing its from my land.

James7xChamp3
Re: Who does Maple syrup ? My brother-in-law has a "sugar shack" up in Sutton, Vermont . I think it's called North Ridge Maple or something like that. He's got all kinds of tubing running from tree to tree then back into the shack. I've helped him cut wood for the fire and run the lines to make sure everything was fine and stuff. The grade A is out of this world! Great stuff!
