Little brother's first bird!

Well I've felt horrible all week... Saturday was opening morning, so my lil brother Jon Reuben and I hit the woods in search of his first turkey. We ended up setting up on three strutters, a couple jakes, and 9 hens that morning, but I held him up from shooting when they hung up at 40 yards... just didn't feel comfortable with him taking that shot plus I thought we'd just set up closer the next morning. However, my mom decided they'd leave for vacation early the next morning instead of waiting for the afternoon as originally planned. :(

The week didn't go great for me, birds hardly gobbled at all, but with the weather warming up yesterday I hit the woods to try to roost a bird for Ru who was on the way home. Ended up roosting a flock of 10 or so hens and 4 jakes(legal for youth in MS if it is their first bird of season). We snuck in 40 minutes before daylight and sat amongst them. The birds flew down and went away from us though I did my best to coax the hens to come in to our setup. We gave them awhile to get into the next hollow and then started making a big loop around them. We set up when we got close enough to hear them scratching around over the next ridge. A few clucks and soft yelps, and the four jakes came running in... ru flopped one at thirty yards!

Way to go!!!! Congrats to your little brother on his first bird!!! Congrats to you too for help making it happen.

That sounds like what I've experienced in my neck of the woods so far. Poor gobbling activity when they gobbled at all. Nothing at all during the mid to late morning hours either. Had one close encounter that ended way too early on the only bird I've had answer a call so far this season. Not close enough though.
