Would a remington 870 in 20 gauge do okay?

I'm far from an expert. But, from what I can see, it's more of a matter of who's behind the gun rather than what the gun is. I started with my Amantino 20 ga. SxS and can still average around 88-90/100 with it. Mt dad.....who rarely ever shoots trap, can run 25/25 with his Westernfield (Montgomery Ward's Mossberg) 12 ga. with a big old Poly-choke on the end.

You'll do well and have lots of fun with your 870.

I worked for 4 years at our local skeet and sporting clays club in Duluth. They had the two games listed above along with trap, 5 stand, and duck and pheasant hunts during the fall and early winter. I never shot a lot of trap, but it was always just as fun as any of the other games, and is a great one to shoot when you weren't hitting anything on the other courses lol

As for the guy wondering if his 870 20ga will work for trap shooting? You bet it will! Those 870's are great guns that last forever and are cheap. I hope to buy one someday. I've seen guys shoot trap with 28ga over-and-unders and absolutely blast targets. Like the one guy said before, it's more the shooter behind the gun than the gun itself. I've had days where the regulars (who think so highly of themselves) would come in and ask me to shoot, and i'd go out there and smoke every one of those guys with my little Winchester 20ga pump :D :gun2: best feeling in the world

Yes, you can get by with field guns and some people do great with them. I beleive to be the best that you can be and to competitive you will be better off with a gun fitted to your build and to have a 60-40 to 70-30 shooting gun. Trap guns tend to have a high POI compared to the flatter shooting sporting and skeet guns, the reason being the targets are rising.

I shoot dedicated Beretta trap targets guns, 391 Gold, 682 Gold E Combo and the new UGB25 Xcel. The 391 is my singles gun and uses a release trigger, it is one smooth, light recoiling gun.

I own a 391 urika optima and love it. I've also shot 682's before and love the feel of them. They seem perfectly balanced and shoot great.

I shot trap league in my hometown a few summers ago. We had a big meet there with teams from about 5 or 6 different towns and i beat everyone. I think there was almost 100 people there. Shot a 99/100 using two different guns! During trap league, i shot my beretta extrema and a remington 870. Im going back to my hometown to work this summer so hopefully they still have the trap league going. Dad used to take my younger brother and i to the meat shoots one sunday every month. My brother was probably only 8 or 9 and i was 10 or 11 and we were literally beating 50 year old guys shooting guns worth thousands of dollars. We were only shooting little benelli montefeltro 20ga's

Last I shot was at a pre-superbowl party. Just casually shooting clay birds, but I was doing pretty well with my Supernova 12ga. Got a couple doubles when I tried for both and I think I may have been hitting them the best out of everyone there. I was pumped because I don't really shoot clays often; maybe twice a year.

I shoot a BT-99. It's kind of tuff shooting doubles though---- :) CB

What.........you don't shoot doubles with a live round between you pinkie & ring finger?? I thought everybody could shoot, crack a 99, drop the 2nd round in and finish the double.

Must be the bi-focals.

:D

We have a fun trap club that shoots every Tuesday night in the summer. Nothing like improving your shooting skills by shooting hundreds of birds.

As for the gun.... As stated above 1. get a gun that fits properly 2. It's all about the person behind the gun. I have outshot people with $5,000.00 guns and got my butt kicked by people with $200.00 guns.

good luck to all
