njbowhntr
I have recently purchased a 7mm STW. I will be reloading this gun. I am looking to see who reloads a 7mm for hunting. I would like to know: what bullet do you shoot and kinda why. I will be making up a few different bullets and different powder loads. Just looking for a good starting point with bullets. Thanks alot. OJR
Re: 7mm reloading A friend of mine has one and he found out that you need to use a bullet with a fairly tough jacket. He tried Ballistic Tips and they blew up due to the velocity. He is using Barnes and Hornady Interbonds. Good luck with those. He shot an elk with the Barnes and it was a one shot kill. AJ
Re: 7mm reloading [ QUOTE ] A friend of mine has one and he found out that you need to use a bullet with a fairly tough jacket. He tried Ballistic Tips and they blew up due to the velocity. [/ QUOTE ] I know Ballistic Tips will handle faster velocities than the STW is capable of. Unless he was shooting a super lightweight bullet in excess of 4200 fps the problems were not because of the bullet. Most likely, it was due to the roughness of the bore. The rougher the bore is, the more it tears up the jacket. Once the jacket is in bad shape it is easier to frag due to high velocity. The Ballistic Tip is not a very good choice in the STW anyway, unless all shots are going to be 200+ yards away.
njbowhntr
Re: 7mm reloading The two I have been looking at are the Barnes 150gr. X-Bullet BT and the Sierra 160gr GameKing HP BT. I like the advantages of the BT when it comes to long range shoots. Even though I know 90% of animals are shot at under 200 yards, I have the ability to shoot out to 500 yards. Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 7mm reloading Sierra makes great bullets, as do Barnes, can't go wrong with either choice. Pick a bullet....put it on the right spot on the animal.
njbowhntr
Re: 7mm reloading Well I think I picked a winner. Today I purchased some Hornady 154gr. Interbonds. I talked with a guy I know that shoots a STW. He has had his best luck with Hornady. So that is going to be my starting point.
