Colorado trophy elk units?

The first question for you would be if you have any pref. points built up? If not you can forget about the "trophy units" for a while. The way tags are allocated in Colorado is based, for the most part, purely on he who has the most points gets the tag. So if you don't have any points built up, you can still draw a tag in some of the lesser units, but will not be able to in the trophy units.

With that said, according to the draw odds and in no particular order units 2, 10, 40, 61, 201 and 76 require the most points to draw. Anywhere from 16 to 19 points or more.

TX-----you got it covered. I think this year Colorado is going to a hybrid type draw for units requiring 5 or more points. If you have 5 points then a % will go to the highest preference points & a % to those with 5 points or more. At least you'll have a chance if you have 5 points----slim chance but still a chance. This is for deer, elk, & antelope. Moose, sheep, & mtn goat are in a different bracket.

OU----to answer you question---yes a muzzleloader will as close to the rut as you can get. Archery is going during the same time. I've always thought the 1st rifle season is the one to go on. Elk are still bugling---at least the 1st morning---after the guns start, that's another story. Good luck, CB

It all depends upon what you wish to call a trophy, and what you're willing to sacrifice to get it. I'll show you some 350" bulls on public land during archery season. They're 9 miles from the closest road ( dirt trail) and 20 miles from civilization. We'll hike in one day, hunt 4 days, pack out 2 days. They'll be there. We'll get them. No trucks. No tents. Not much food. If you want comfort this ain't it. But if you want trophy/public land Elk..........it's there. If you need comfort..............good luck. You'll be hunting with everyone else. Lots of comfort....not many Elk. You need to park the truck and walk for a day or so, sleep under the stars, and then walk some more. It ain't easy.........but it's worth it. It's where they live.

I was told years ago that muzzleloader season was the best for bugling bulls, any opinions on that?

Brian

By the way.................... Muzzleloader is 8 days in Sept. Good Luck getting a tag. Archery is over the counter and season is Aug 28 till Sept 26. Give me a stick and a string........I'll find the Elk.

Did my 1st Co. elk hunt this year. With a bow.. Well we were not trophy hunting. We were just hunting and any elk would have been a trophey for us. We came home with no elk!! It aint like it looks on TV!! However this was a plublic hunt with no guides. We learned alot and cant wait to go back this year.

Something to look in too is the area you go to, the pine beatle has killed alot of trees. Find out about the area your wanting to go to..I think this has alot to do with the elk!! It did in the area we went to.

Unit 61 is a trophy unit but you'll notice that unlike the others mentioned there are cow elk hunts running the same time as the bull hunts. These are not trophy hunters and may ruin your hunt.

I'm with JJL. Go deep, spend lots of time there and you'll score big. A 350 bull is a big bull anywhere, especially Colorado. I've seen bigger but not many.

Is 61 in the uncompadre(spelling?) near Montrose?

Unit 61 is a once in a lifetime tag, even for residents.

1 out of every 3 Elk that live in North America resides in Colorado. There's lots of Elk.............There's lots of OTC tags.............There's lots of public land.................There's also LOTS of hunters.

Get away from the crowds and you'll find ELK.

They're waiting for you............................................

Never been to CO. for elk, but been on three trips to oregon. Archery is the way to go if you want a decent shot at a trophy without twenty years of points under your belt. 20 miles might be a little extreme to find a single trophy bull but it is true the farther you get away from humans the better off you will be. Sometimes it is just about going where no one else is willing to go, even if it means going vertical. Don't take your tips from TV, calling public land bulls is very touchy. The more miles you cover, the more animals you are gonna see.

Just put in for points again this year, that will give me 5 deer & 3 elk points. There is a possibility of OTC elk, but that depends upon some draws in other states.

Might be trying to tell you to stay out of units with a 5 in them. Nothing worse than getting sick on a hunt. If we do the OTC it will most likely be in 80/81.

give me some ideas.

Archery season runs from Aug. 28- Sept. 26

non-resident tags are $541.00 cow tags $351.00

We're 6 1/2 hours SW of Denver with local air service to Montrose ( 20 minutes from here )

Lots of BLM to hunt ranging from easy to insane. We can set up High Country camp or stay in civilization ( here at the house ).
