Its awful funny how all these states now are looking to reduce the deer heard! I personally think it has to something with our car insurance companies. At first, I thought it was only a PA problem, but it seems to be nation wide problem now!

I know its the insurance companies pushing for it here, theyve come right out in the newspaper saying so frown.gif

Re: How many deer?

There are 4 of us. I'm the only female. My husband shot 6 this year, I shot 4. We used two deer for sausage. Gave one away. And cut up steaks, ground the rest and that will last us til next season. We never buy beef. Only time I visit the meat department is to buy chicken! We also give some ground venison to friends and family who don't hunt.

Im seeing something here and I just gotta ask, what do the regulations in your states say about giving these deer away?Just curious, here I think, and Ill stress that because Im not sure, you can only give so many lbs of meat to a person, which dont even come close to being a full deer, and you have to give them a paper with it with all your information on it, name, phone ,adress, where the deer was killed etc...

Also they have a law that you can only have a certain amount of deer meat in your freezer after a certain date, which is hard to comply with if they have you shooting a dozen deer a year.Seems like they just make things harder than they should have to be for getting rid of or storing your deer in this state confused.gif

in indiana there is no law in how mutch deer meet you can have as long as they are taged. when you harvest a deer hear you tag it with a transportation tag than go to a check in station ( bait store, walmart, ect) and get a perminate tag. thats how we can give deer to family and friends. the perminate tag stayes with each deer you harvest saying this deer is ligel.

Re: How many deer?

We give the meat to family and close friends. I figure it's nobody's business anyway. Besides, how would they regulate that? I'm gonna see if there are any rules regarding that but I have never heard of it. And I am pretty sure there are no rules regarding how long you can keep it in your PERSONAL freezer. How would they know?? That's very interesting. There is no tagging system in this state either.

But if you shoot a big enough deer it lasts alot longer.

That's a good point I didn't think about camelNS. Down here the average mature doe weighs around 110# (live weight) and the average mature buck weighs about 175# (live weight). As far as total weight of the meat from processed deer, it would probably take at least 1 doe and 1 mature buck down here to equal 1 of your bucks. Maybe more! wink.gif

I'm the same way. I have no problem ordering a very rare steak in an upscale reputable restaurant. But when I go to a BBQ I won't touch it. And when it is some other type of meat I watch very carefully.

I've killed eleven and we've already eaten 6. I figure we'll run out of meat in June or July, but I should be stocked up on fish by then. Every once in awhile, I'll kill one and dress it for some of the elderly people around or for the Mexicans when they ask for it.

One year in college when I couldn't afford heat or groceries, I ate 14 deer and who knows how many fish fillets and small game by myself.

I have a lot of friends I give deer meat to, but my 2 kids (8 and 9 yrs) and I eat about 3-4 mature does over a years time or 2 mature bucks. This season we have had 2 mature does and a mature buck in the freezer (I'd say I've given almost one of the does to friends). This will likely run out in July/August. If I don't get one more next weekend, I'll have to buy meat for a couple months. Our season opens in October.

I always have people wanting deer meat, I just get tired of processing (I do it all myself). Last year I processed 7 deer and that was too much work. This year I spread my kills out. If I just finished processing I'm only trophy hunting for a week or two. If I have the next day off to process, I'm often shooting a doe that hunt.

Seems that no matter how many I kill I never have any deer meat left come October.
