Did Some Preliminary Turkey Scouting

I went to my son's house this afternoon to check out the possibility of hunting there this spring for turkeys. He lives in the country, but doesn't have a great deal of property, so I was checking out the corner on the back end of his place to see if I could set up a blind there. Turkey season opens April 26th here and I'm hoping to get out and give it a whirl.

I'll likely try my bow, but if they are too elusive, then I'll consider breaking out the shotgun. I've got a box call and a mouth diaphram that I've been practising with. I've also got a couple decoys. They're just cheapies, a hen and a jake, so I'd like to get a good tom decoy in a strut pose.

I've been watching for a good price on a Double Bull Dark Horse. They're $300 at Cabelas and Bass Pro stateside, but I'm unsure as to what the price is at Bass Pro at Vaughan north of Toronto. I could order from the states, but after S&H, tax, customs PST and GST, exchange and bridge fare to pick it up, I'd likely have about $425 to $450 in it. That's too much in my books.

I was out near Athens today, which is just north of Brockville. I was heading to a friend's sugar bush to help him and another friend hook up a diesel generator.

Just before we got to the bush, we passed about 25 turkeys alongside the road. Sure gets the adrenalaine flowing thinking about opening day in another 3-1/2 weeks.

Oh and BTW, it was a gorgeous day in the woods today. Skitters are starting to come out though.
