DSGB
A guy I work with let me borrow his .17 H.M.R. for the weekend to do some squirrel hunting. He has it set up for competitive shooting - target barrell, hair trigger, etc. - but it did a fine job on the squirrels. I hit the first one I shot at, and guess what happened? He got his head (what was left of it) stuck in a fork in the tree where a branch comes out. I took this while I was standing at the base of the limb. He was about 15 feet off the ground. I ended up getting eight squirrels, most of 'em with one shot! Here's a pic I took of the whole gang. It was dark by the time I got back to the house, but you can see most of 'em. (All of 'em look the same anyway ) I guess that'll teach 'em to chew on my climber! BTW If anyone wants to see what it did to that squirrel's head, I have a picture.LOL Just send a PM. spyderpancake
Re: Squirrels I have some pictures I will try to post of a squirrel hunt me and my brothers went on in January. We shot 26-I got 12 of them(the limit-a first!) I shot 8 with my .17 and 4 with my .22. What was amazing was that I made head shots on every one of them-and 4 of the squirrels were over 100 yards away! It was awesome, I think the hummer is an awesome squirrel hunting round. spyderpancake
Re: Squirrels Hummer is just one of the common names for HMR. The ballistic tips do a lot of damage, but the CCI hollow-points don't tear them up nearly as bad. They also have come out with a couple soft-point loads that will mushroom instead of fragmenting, but I haven't got a chance to try them yet. The .17hmr is a great round, no exaggeration, my marlin will outshoot any of my other guns out to 150 yards. That is what makes them so fun to squirrel hunt with, you can hit them exactly where you want to. lilhunter-save $30 more and get a Marlin or Savage hummer. Shoot one once and you will be addicted!
