hutchies
They are a pain in the butt to work on. Tore down the wifes 2003 Gen I Dodge duranogo this weekend. New: Tie Rods Upper Ball Joints Lower Ball Joints Hub on the drivers side.............which dodge now sells sealed hubs so you can't replace wheel bearings. Thats a whole different can of worms I don't wanna open up. Instead of being a $20 wheel bearing you have to pay $120 for the hub..........if it would have had 4 wheel abs it would have been $250 I don't understand dodges thinking. The only thing blocking stuff from getting in the hub splines is the dust sheild and sealed bearing. We fought that spindle for a long time and dang near broke the proto puller trying to get it out of the hub............then we had to fight the hub to get it out of the spindle........ redkneck
Haven't worked on a dodge. Replaced uppers and lowers on the explorer a few weeks ago and that was a pain getting the new lowers in on the truck. Wish I wouldn't have bothered since we traded the thing a month later! hutchies
Yeah mine won't be getting traded anytime soon. It's paid for and I got a 13 year old that will probably end up with it.
Shaun_300
I've worked on a few dodges and fords and they are setup similar to GM's. I like the hub setup myself. All you need is a good strong air hammer to pop the axle loose, sometimes they just push back with your hand if you're lucky. To get the hub itself out use an air hammer with a punch bit and hit right where the bolt comes through it to turn the hub, it'll break free and spin right out. Some of the 2wd chevy trucks seize in there solid. I've had a couple that I've had to absolutely pound out with a sledge hammer. Had one that I had to cut the hub out with the torch it was seized in there that bad. There wasn't a big enough hammer on the face of this earth to get that baby out. wtnhunt
Hmmm, will have to keep this in mind. Our durango does have 4 wheel abs discs and is 4wd. Wonder if any of that is covered in the lifetime powertrain warranty we have on our durango since the front axles are part of the drivetrain. Older dodges were not too much trouble to work on, at least the 78 truck I had wasn't. It had very few stock parts on it.
Shaun_300
Wheel bearings and u-joints are both covered under the powertrain warranty in GM's, I imagine it is with Dodge too. Some of the hubs are close to $800, just for the part, but most are between $300 and $400.
