johnf
I came on to a good deal on a Leupold VI. I think its a 2-7x33. It's shotgun model with the NWTF logo on it. Still new in box. I got it for $100 so I didn't think I could go wrong. I've got two guns that I don't have a scope for. One is a youth modle NEF 223 that I got for my kids. It's got a red dot on it now and shoots less than .5" at 50 yards with a 6MOA dot. I've thought about using it for a varmint gun and have killed one deer with it and have thought about using it when I'm going on long treks into the woods because it's so light. The other gun is my 30-30 marlin that I've not used in about 5 years for hunting, but it did shoot very well, but was semi-retired after I got a 243 and 25-06. I stole the scope off of it and put it on my ML. So which gun to I put the scope on.
Diamond Archer 01
I would put it on the 30-30. That would be a good gun for deer hunting. I have a scope on my 30-30 and killed my first deer with it this year.
Adjam5
Hey John...I could be wrong, but maybe shotgun scopes are set for trajectories of slugs. Bullets are way flatter shooting than slugs. If it works, put the scope on the thutty thutty. All I use for deer hunting here in NY;). 150gr FN's are great deer medicine.
bluelund79
Personally, I'd buy a new gun to put it on! Seriously, put it in the NEF. The 30-30 should be bare. I have a Marlin 3x9 scope that came with my 30-30 and its sitting in a box, 30-30's should be iron sights imo...

I think a scope is a scope Adjam5. Otherwise a 243 and a 22lr couldn't use the same scope. I think I'm going to put the red dot on the 30-30 and put the new Leupold on the 223. Shotgun scopes are usually set to be Paralax free at 50 yards Rifle scopes are usually set to be paralax free at 100 yards. When you see a scope with an adjustable objective lens this lens adjusts the paralax setting. Now what exactly all this means is very complicated and 99% of the time doesn't matter a bit. As far are the scope preforming differently ballistically that is not true. So go ahead with your plan and mount it on the 223 and enjoy it. It should work fine. I do like bluelunds idea though, seems like a great reason to buy a new gun to me. :gun2:

Shaun_300
If I were you John I'd take the red dot off the .223 and put it on the .30-30 and then put the Leupold on the .223.
johnf
If I were you John I'd take the red dot off the .223 and put it on the .30-30 and then put the Leupold on the .223. That's what I did. I got it sighted in and it shot about 1.75" at 125 yards out of the back of my truck. Not that great, but pretty good for a 4lb riffle with a 7lb trigger that's the size of a red rider bb gun.
