pintail_drake2004
did the gun come with a book? if so it will have loading info in it. Cannot tell you about the bullets to use. Need to know the rate of twist in the barrel. will make a difference on round balls or conicals. Now I shoot a flintlock and I use Goex FFG powder for the charge, and FFFG powder for prime. THe net is full of loading charts but a rule of thumb is that the max load is about 2x the cal of the flintlock (ex. .54 max load of about 108gr powder)

PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
Since it is a flintlock real black powder works the best. I have been hunting with a flintlock since 1976 or there about and have seen guys try the substitutes but nothing works like Goex FFG or FFFG in the barrel and FFFG or FFFFG in the pan. If your rifle has the rate of twist listed on the barrel and it is 1:48 you have a choice of a patched round ball or one of the bore sized conicals like the maxi ball. If it is a slower rate of twist like 1:60 or 1:72 then it is strictly a round ball rifle but you can drive it pretty hard at those rates of twist. If it were me I would try 75 grains of 3f and a .490 round ball with either an .010 or .015 patch. If that combo loads well try going up 5 grains of powder and shoot again I would add 5 grains till I am shooting around 90 grains of powder. Anything more than that will just punish the shooter. Keep track of your groups because they whould get tighter and then start to open up. Pick the best group and shoot that combo. The patched round ball should be a fairly tight fit when loading but not so tight that you have to use both hands to get it down on the powder. If you know someone you can trust that shoots a flintlock get with them as there is a bit of learning to shoot that rifle real well.
