Shaun_300
This is a darn interesting picture and story even if you aren't into fishing, But please show it to anyone you know that likes to fish. FYI: This sturgeon is still alive, just worn out from the fight. As the sports fishermen they are, they turned him loose after the photo. This Sturgeon was caught on the LAKE OF THE WOODS, KENORA, ONTARIO It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1". It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in. Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water. They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us. TBow
I recall about 20 years ago I was working on the St. Lawrence River near Cornwall, Ontario. I had to tie up to a buoy to carry out repairs and noticed a 1/4" ployprop rope tied to the buoy near the water line. The locals have been noted for putting out night lines for sturgeon and just let the rope with large hooks and chunks of pork on them drift onto the bottom. They then check the lines every morning. Well when I saw the line, I grabbed it out of curiousity more than anything. It felt like I was hauling on a Kenworth. After about one minute I soon let the line go. Not that I wanted to haul a sturgeon into the boat, I was just curious. Only 4 x 24s eh? Darn caunucks must'a been cutting back! dbHunterNY
I saw a guy catch a couple of those on a show on the Outdoor channel. I think it was called Monster Fish or something. It's supposed to be the largest freshwater fish. It'd be very cool to catch one.
bowhuntMN
Was that the same Lake of the Woods that borders MN? My grandparents have had a lakehome up there at one of the resorts ever since my mom was a kid. I've never heard of any sturgeon coming out of it tho, just monster walleyes and northerns.
