Ethan Givan
I have seen 2 bucks in this last week that still have antlers. Its the first of April, shouldnt they have lost them about a month or two ago? The first one I saw was Tuesday afternoon. A little buck with only his right side left, with about 4 points on it. Then tonight I saw a very tall 5 pointer with his head gear still attached. I cant remember ever seeing bucks with antlers this time of year. Anyone else seeing this or seen this before? Bucks in a healthy deer herd will often hold on to their antlers until the new ones start to form. Its a good thing. However, bucks will continue to spar as long as they have antlers, and this can sometimes lead to deformities in the next years rack because the pedicles receive injuries during the early stages of antler development. Tominator
I've seen a few as late as March, but only one in April, and that was about mid April I believe. My buddy's mom hit it with her car. We butchered it that night and they were still firmly attached.
wtnhunt
Can remember seeing antlers still on young bucks in March, not sure I remember ever seeing any still carrying even one side in April though.
m gardner
When I lived in Vermont the oldtimers always said they dropped them usually when the sap began to run if the winter wasn't severe. If they still have antlers that's a good sign. Mark
ChrisSeb53
i agree.. i would think that if a deer still had its antlers that late that it meant that the deer had a mild winter and also had an abundant source of food and nutrition.. so yeah that is a good thing

gzilla45
About a week and a half ago I saw a 5 pointer in my backyward and thought I was seeing things. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
