ruttinbuc
With spring breaking out all over the place I went down to the river Tuesday night and cast some darts. The very first cast I caught a small buck shad. Fished until I lost that dart and tied on a different color. Bang another hookup. Not bad for an 1/2 hour of chucking from shore. The fish were here. Today, I took my boat and fished from 2:30 until 7:00 and let me tell you...it was non-stop. I had over a hundred hookups and managed to land 41 American Shad. Mostly small bucks with some roe mixed in. Somme of the bucks were pushing 4/5 lbs. I had 16 doubles and of those I landed both fish 5 times. Wow, never had I had such success in this part of the year. I literally could not turn my back on the riggers as they went off almost every minute. Here is a little video of Wednesday's action
Trigger
That's awesome. Are you using a down rigger to fish for em?
The Bug House
Looks like a great day! I hope you fried those puppies up! I think I read that shad can't be taken from the hudson River this year, due to declining numbers.

Tominator
Stupid question: Do you eat those things?
ruttinbuc
Stupid question: Do you eat those things? What they do with these fish is fillet them and and nail them on an oak board with an X of bacon above them and line up the boards along a charcoal pit . The heat cooks the fish and the bacon with the bacon juices basting the fish. When it looks like it is cooked you throw away the shad and the bacon and eat the board! Actually, they are pretty good eating that way. Just have to deal with a lot of bones. Like anything we might like to eat preparation is the key. They used to have some cook offs at the festivals of old and there were some pretty good dishes people came up with. There are some recipes about, but again its all in the preperation. The roe (eggs) are considered a delicacy by a lot of a people. They sure are a blast to catch. I put them all back unless they are bleeding. Then I keep them for an Asian family I know who eats them
