My Worst Fear Realized

Seven months ago when I retired, there were a few things I swore I'd never do, but today one of my worst fears came to pass.

The weather had predicted rain for today, so I hadn't planed on working outside, hence I made no preparations. Well the weather although cool, had no precipitation, but my awaiting jobs continued to wait as I had no materials with which to tackle them. So there I was stranded at home with nothing to do. So just in an effort to fill the time I did what I swore I'd only so in a dire emergency. That's right, I started sorting and organizing the nuts and bolts cache in my workshop! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !

Well at least there was one small concellation to my afternoon's activity. I was able to stave off any urges to place the hardware assortments into glass jars and screw them onto lids attached to the botton of my shelves! Red Green says that's a sure sign of getting old!

I know what you mean.

I retired in 2002 and have the most organized workshop in Arkansas.

Just the other day I got my unused 4 year old Drill Doctor out and sharpened every dull and broken drill bit I have accumulated in the last fifty years. I probably won't ever touch it again. I even got the shop vac out and got rid of all the winter spider webs that were growing around the windows.

All of my nuts, bolts and washers are all part of my treasured "stuff" that I've been collecting for years. It's hard to think of my stuff going to some stranger or a cold dark place where my stuff will miss me I'm sure. I just wouldn't be able to sleep nights knowing my stuff wasn't my stuff anymore.

I can't tell you how many times I've endeavored to sort through my stuff and cut down the size of my stuff, but then that lingering question always arises, "What if I do a project or repair just next week and find I need this stuff to fix it, and I've tossed it all out?". No I better hang on to that stuff for another 20 years in case I might need it. That way my kids will have all my stuff to sort through when I pass on. Seems fair for all the grief they put me through during their teenage years when they used to trash all my good stuff without even a thought!

And what's with my wife yelling at me the other day while I was sorting and mumbling, "It's all my stuff. It's mine. All mine!".

I vauguely recall her distant words in the background, "GEOFF! STEP AWAY FROM THE PARTS BINS!!!!!!", as she was calling my kids for help! :hammer1:

Stick a fork in him, he's done.

The next thing you know, you will be yelling at the neighborhood kids for getting on your lawn and screaming about how when you were their age, you had respect for your elders! :D

I need to do the same thing as you did. I keep buying things I already have!

Enjoy your retirement you old fart.
