du_legacy410
dogs and deer i have a plantation in south georgia with plenty of hardwoods andswamp and i have seen packs of dogs running around chasin the deer off and it sucks for me and my felloe hunters. i killed a large pitbull on the way out of the woods. it is due to our neighbor having too many dogs to handle. it is just sad. swampwright
We had a pack of 5 or 6 farm dogs around here acouple of years ago killing deer. German shepard acouple of labs and mutts. I dont know if they were wild or loose farm dogs but, they were traveling the river. We went out and got two of them but I found over 15 deer that year that it looked like the dogs had got. Another group of guys went out one day looking for them and took down one more. After the snow melted I never saw or heard anymore about the pack. They did a number on alot of deer and even took some calves out. Could have been worst if the hunting guys around here didnt work together and take some out. If a dog does it once it can do it again. I hate shooting a dog but you have to.
String Music
We have packs of wild dogs that run deer down. It is bad in the winter time when the deer are exhausted and have little cover.
Hoosierbuck
Not a lot needs to be said about it, there is an answer, it's simple and effective. Like the man said, SSS. It is not pleasant, and it is not for everybody, but sometimes things need to get done we would just as soon not deal with. HB
Doc
I have often wondered how many deer are killed by dogs that never actually catch them. Here in the more northern parts of deer country, winter can be pretty rough on the deer herd, even lethal. Often, the very last of the deer's fat reserves are used up just in time for the eventual relief of spring's warmer weather with renewed food sources. Probably the very last thing that they need is to have additional calories needlessly burned up trying to elude dogs over long distance chases, and through some heavy snow. We often think of dog predation as only involving those dogs that actually catch and kill deer. But I suspect that there are a lot of cases where simple pursuit causes the deer's eventual demise because of needed reserves being run off the deer. I have often wondered how big a factor this is with coyotes as well. Doc
Stinger-Hunter
I was sitting in my tree stand a few years back and saw a neighbor's dog jump the fence toward me. 6 deer shot out of their beds and took off running in every direction. The dog spearheaded towards one of the smaller does and chased her for about 10 minutes. I lost sight of the chase a few times and then suddenly the doe came walking out behind a brush pile breathing heavily with a chunk of her rear end missing. I didn't see the dog anywhere, but on my way back I saw an 8 pointer thrashing about near a few small trees and started to put the stalk on him. I couldn't believe how close I was able to get, in fact, it began to scare me a bit since I've never been able to stalk so close to a buck before. Then, wouldn't you know it, that buck was thrashing about cause he was laying the smack down on that dog. The dog had been speared by the buck's antlers and he was going to town on this dog. Sometimes nature takes care of these types of problems and sometimes you have to become part of nature and take them out yourself, I guess. Doc
I've always said that if a buck ever figured out how lethal its defenses are, no hunter would ever be safe in the woods. I guess the same thing could be said for the safety of dogs.....lol. By the way, did you shoot the buck? If you did I assume you let him get finished with the deer-eating dog first....lol. MichiganHunter
I've seen video of a deer beating up some guy. I believe you probably made the right decision. Doc I've seen 2 versions of that video...1 is just the deer kicking the guy, the other is the gun soaking him self in elk, pee, deer pee and saying how he's going out looking for it...he's a super tard.
