elkoholic
Some of the time everything happens just the way it is supposed to. It is the first weekend of the season and I did not even plan on doing any serious hunting, but was planning a scouting hike up the ridge from the house this afternoon. Yesterday was the first day and I did not hear any shots and that was no surprise as I had not seen any turkeys in the near vicinity yet this spring and I did not even bother going out. This afternoon I had a few chores to do before taking my hike and while working in the back yard I heard a gobble from several hundred yards down the hill from the house. Well, the chores would have to wait as it was game on and I grabbed the Remington 870 super mag and a couple of shells, a camo shirt, my RMEF hat and a box call and set off down the hill. When I got to about 100 yards of the last gobble I'd heard, I set up next to a slash pile from a Forest Service thinning operation and did a little calling. The lone answering gobble came from about 200 yards away near an old gravel pit. When it became obvious the bird had no intention of coming my way the decision to move along a ridge that overlooks the old pit was made. Easing down the ridge and peering over the edge I spotted the gobbler and about a half dozen hens feeding along 70 yards below me. I set down against a big old ponderosa and played some box call music, just a few pleading purrs and a couple of putts and here they came up the hill. The gobbler was in the lead and stopped at about ten yards but the hens were directly in back of him and I had no shot. After several minutes he started moving to my right and at about 30 yards he was clear of the hens and I sent 2&1/4 ounces of # 6s his way. This is by far the easiest, and shortest, turkey hunt I have ever had. He is also my heaviest bird ever taken at a hair under 26 lbs. He only had one spur, that being 7/8 inch, and a 9&1/2 inch beard. Our new beagle puppy was a little curious
