TN Bucknasty
I'm always picking apart every mount I see so let's see how good of an eye you have. Here are picture of my first and second deer mounts from a few years back when I was still practicing. I nicknamed the first one "Hammered ****". See if you can spot the places where I screwed up. TN Bucknasty
Here is a more recent one. I think this one actually looks pretty good. Can you see the differences?
Kels
Nose is too black with no texture. Lips pulled and then painted black, hard to tell but the antler set looks off. ears look ok, but the ear butts look miss shaped. but wow, you have improved on your recent one! Keep up the good work! To me, for deer #1 you're right about the Nose texture, but what sticks out to me is the difference in the eyes. One is bigger than the other. Hide is pretty rough, too where I cut so many holes in it. Deer #2 has the tucked lips and yes the antler set looks off and the ear butts are as well. Another thing I screwed up was the front corners of the eyes. I had to mount about 5 before I got comfortable and confident with it. The thing is that 95% of people who look at these mounts will probably not be able to spot the errors. They'll look at the rack and then at the hide. Then they'll say, "Looks pretty good to me." That in no way means that this is good work, but I'm often amazed at what will pass off as good taxidermy. I'm also amazed at how bad some of the mounts I admired as a kid look to me now. Kels
haha I agree with you. I see alot of people say certain mounts looks great, when if you take a closer look are very poor mounts. Its all about detail. Even the best taxidermist has room to improve
MNcrittergittr
Glad you guys take so much pride in your work, and care about attention to detail. I remember the first thing I ever got mounted. The most beautiful woody drake I ever saw let alone was lucky enough to harvest. It was me and my best huntin' buddy's (my dog) first bird together. I was SO excited to have it mounted!...What I got back looked like something that had been sitting in someone's attic for 30 years. I was so dissapointed, it made me sick! We still have the photos and memories, but mounts are special to people....Anyway, just wanted to say kudos. Keep up the good work.
