NiteRunner
What kind of problems are we talking about if you break off a spark plug while giving your truck a tune up? Is it still drivable? Is it an easy fix? Thanks!
redkneck
Did you just break the porcelain or strip it out?
Leo
Caution! That's a dangerous situation. Depending how it's broken it could be extremely dangerous if you simply started the engine. So don't even start the engine until you're sure it's fixed!
Shaun_300
Let me guess, Ford F-150 with a 5.4L engine? They are SO bad for that, Ford needs to feel their freakin head when it comes to using a plug with 3 inches of thread where the head depth is only an inch. All the carbon builds up on the extra threads on the plug and has a REAL hard time coming through the cylinder head. If that breaks off it's one heck of a job to get it out, you're talking hours of extra labour if they have to pull the head off to drill it out and do a heli-coil. Or if the bottom half is laying on top of the piston. If the porcelain it's no biggie, basically as easy as changing the plug.
NiteRunner
It is an F-150, not sure on the engine though. I think the whole thing broke off in there. The truck belonged to someone I know, so I didn't know all the details. Since I'm in the market for a truck I figured this would be a good question to ask just in case and it certainly sounds like something I don't want to get involved in! Thanks guys! redkneck
Sounds like a head to be pulled.
Shaun_300
If the truck was started with the broken plug in the cylinder if it fell right down you'd be looking at a new engine. It would have hammered the heck out of the cylinder walls, piston and head. Wouldn't even go there Laura!
