Update on minerals and food plot

Recommended Posts

Well after 14 hours of hard work my first food plot is under way. I'll be planting Whitetail Institute's No Plow seed because of the area. There is no way I could get any type of machinery back here. Started off by cutting down all the brush. I took out a couple bigger trees too. All done with a hand saw from Outdoor Edge. After cutting all the limbs I used the leaf blower. Finally after that I raked out the whole area and sprayed it down with weed killer. Will be back to plant in a couple of weeks. The size of the plot is about 25 x 15 yards.I found it amazing that I could do all this with mostly hand tools. I also made the homemade mineral I posted about a while ago. Well I had to go back to the property the next day. By my suprise there were already deer tracks all over the mineral. Can't wait to check trail camera pictures.

Not real familiar with what is in the WI mixes, but would have to wonder if when the leaves come in if you are going to get enough light to your plot. Looks like it should be a great plot.

The seed only needs about 4 hours of sunlight per day. The more the better of course. Thats why I cut out some of the bigger trees in the middle of the area. It's pretty open above the plot.

Should do great then.

How close is the plot to the mineral site and the creek crossing. Some pretty sweet potential stand setups in there.

Mineral station is at most 200 yards away from plot. Creek crossing is about 100 yards away from Mineral Station. Mineral Station is down in the lower part of the property. Really thick back there and tons of sign all year long. Every evening I heard deer crossing the creek during the warm months. Kels and I are getting really serious this year about the property. I've had two years to figure things out. The third year will be exceptional I hope.
