"What friends are about"

Hey guys:

Went out turkey hunting with my good friend Bob this morning (4/15). Bob is an older gentleman (at least older then I am) , with a heart of gold. I first met Bob when I moved to Iowa 20+ years ago. Bob loves to turkey hunt and we got together way back when and always try to hunt Iowa's opening week. Like all turkey hunters we have plenty of laughs and stories about the ones he shot and the ones that got away. I call and Bob shoots the birds. When he shoots I always wonder whether the bird will run away or fall over... LOL!!!

This morning it was very windy, however, the birds were gobbling like heck. After 2 1/2 hours of gentle calling the bird worked his way all the way around us and came into the blind from behind some trees. Just as I had hoped. I was watching the show and telling Bob that "he is coming" as he struted and drummed his way in. [NOTE: Bob just went to the Mayo clinic Tuesday for an eye exam... LOL] As the gobbler broke the edge of the trees Bob made a great 30 yard shot and the bird fell over.

I congratulated Bob, shook his hand and I smiled widely and thought..... "what if" ... you see Bob had a heart attack last December and because of the local small town doctor and the great surgeons, who did his triple by-pass at Mayo clinic in Rochester, Bob was able to hunt with me yet another year.

Tom weighed 24 pounds, 1 inch spurs and an 10 1/2 inch beard.

Good luck to all

Great story!! I too hunt with an older guy any chance I get. He had a bypass surgery 2 years ago and although it takes us longer to get where we are going he still enjoys every minute of it. Congrats on getting the bird. We hope to do the same come Monday moring!!
