pointing_dogs_rule
Thursday I took my good friend Bob and called so he could shoot a turkey (photo below). Today I took out a youth, Blake. This morning we had a hen at 5 yards, however, no toms. This afternoon we went out at 3 PM to an area that I had seen toms struting in the afternoons. We got there later then I wanted, only to see two toms struting in the alfalfa. We made a big circle and set up the blind in an area where they couldn't see us (and hopefully would pass by). 15 minutes later they popped out of the woods and headed our way. No struting just walking and eating. They were cautious of my decoys and blind and stayed away at 40 yards... just looking at the set-up. Well, last year when I took Blake we saw several birds and they offered no good shot opportunities. This year I was determined to let him shoot. When it was apparent the birds were not coming any closer I told Blake to "put the sights on the neck and shoot". He did, with the necks fully extended and the bird plopped right over dead. What a great shot. Now for the bad news... I believe in good ethical shots and thought that these birds were about 35 yards (good enough for the Charles Daly O/U with a full choke and 2 3/4 #4's). Later with the rangefinder... it was actually 50 yards. Thank God for that 1 BB that found the head. (photos below). His first bird ever!!! 22 pounds.... 10 inch beard...3/4 inch spurs I had the pleasure of teaching him how to carry a tom out of the woods!!! Note: this is the same youth that I took muzzleloader hunting last fall and harvested the nice 10 point buck (photo below). NOW IT'S MY TURN TO HUNT TURKEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to all the dog BOB'S TURKEY BLAKE'S TURKEY (AND ME) BLAKE'S DEER FROM LAST FALL Edited April 18, 2010 by pointing_dogs_rule

plannerman
Good luck getting yourself a bird!! Great story and wonderful way to share your time. Hunted the last 4 days with my dad who's never turkey hunted. After 18 hours of morning and evening hunts, he scored on his first tom last night. I must be getting old....it's almost more fun helping someone else get a bird than shooting your own!

I'm to the point in life in that "it is more" fun helping someone else. Don't get me wrong I still love to hunt for myself. Good luck to all the dog
