Opening day Ohio Gobbler

I took a nice gobbler on Monday, opening day of Ohio’s season… I did some scouting on Sunday and watched 3 gobblers, 3 jakes, and about 10 hens out in this field for over an hour. It made an easy decision on where to hunt the next day.

I woke up at 4am to make the hour drive and to be set up before the turkey woke up since I didn’t know where they roosted on that side of the farm… of all the years I’ve hunted there, they’ve almost always roosted on the opposite side. I was set up around 5:45 and waited on daylight. Once daylight hit, they started gobbling, but probably around 200 yards away. I decided to wait it out hoping they would make there way to the field like the day before. At about 6:40, 4 hens worked their way passed me a few yards away… once they were well out in the field, I made a few calls, and the gobbler responded from the river bottom, but still a ways out.

After 15 minutes of sitting quiet, I seen brief movement of a white head and the top of a fan at the back of the food plot we planted last year, but due to my position I didn’t have a good view of him. I made a couple light calls, he gobbled, and made his way towards me. A couple minutes later, he walked right into my shooting lane and the hunt was over. He is my first to take on opening day of season… thank goodness for having another tag as I have a couple new places I plan on trying out this year, and I have a couple other hunters that want me to take them out as well… :gunsmilie:
