Quick account of the hunt -

So far, my season has sucked! Hunted Mon-Thurs and barely had any action. I had to work Fri and Sat, so I couldn't go. Sunday rolled around and it was raining and not too great a morning. Took our time getting to our spot, but once there we could hear a distant gobble. The hens were roosted close so we picked a tree and sat down. We had a Hen decoy placed out to our left.

I got to work talking to the girls and slowly that gobble started getting closer. Then the woods went dead silent...

I quit calling and then minutes later the Hens started filtering through the woods towards us.

They saw the decoy and committed to checking it out.

Once up to it they started acting spooky and my dad whispered over to call and that he seen the Tom. I called and then they left her and started right for us.

The Tom was strutting over to my right and not budging.

The hens got closer yet, like 5 yards away!

Finally he broke and started coming. I had the red dot on, but my gun was not fully up nor was my safety off.

The hens moved further to my right while the tom went for the decoy.

I had to make my move to get the safety off.

I only moved my hand an inch when those hens saw it and started putting. I thought the jig was up.

They started to leave, but ol Tom kept coming.

Safety was now off.

The Tom was hesitant now, but once he moved behind a small tree I got the gun up.

He started getting nervous.

My dad whispered over that I better hurry!

I need him to take one more step from away from that tree...

Finally I see his white head in the scope and I let him have it.

He went right down!! I was thrilled!! Biggest Spurred Turkey that I've ever killed and the second that I've gotten with a frozen off beard. I was even able to find my wad laying right by my bird, so I picked it up and kept it for a souvenir.

Cooler yet was this find. After I got my bird we went back out and tried to get my dad one. We stopped to call at this one spot and all of a sudden a hen breaks and runs at like 10 feet away. Scared me half to death! I knew what it meant though and just as I took a couple steps in that direction I saw the nest. 17 Eggs total!
