Strut10
Do they work at all?? We're headed to the Great White North for a couple weeks starting around June 12 or so. I am assuming the blackflies are just going to suck (all puns intended) at that time. Do bug zapper lights work at all on them if you had a couple around your campsite?? Strut10
.....where abouts are you headed to? Ignace. On Hwy 17 about 1/2 way between Thunder Bay and Manitoba.
MichiganHunter
I always tell people that they are a great gift for the neighbor because they actually draw bugs in and if you are sitting close to it, it just makes things worse.
woolybear
Don't think them zappers do much good on the blackies. We got 'em pretty thick here already. Therma cell cuts them down pretty well. Cigarette smoke also works good but you gotta chain smoke to keep them away between butts.

WOW your going a long way up...and a long way away from Shaun and I...if you were crossing at the east end of lake ontario you would be close to us. TBow
What I've found, and have been told about bug lights and zappers, is pretty much what has been mentioned. Don't rely on these units to kill every bug in your vacinity, because to be truthful, there isn't enough bug zappers built to kill every bug you'll encounter on one trip. Use the zappers and lights to draw to main column of skitters and black flies away from your evening activities. Don't place them in close proximity to you or your company. They're use is as a decoy to pull them away from you, but in most camping excursions, you tend to have a campfire which will draw the bugs to you anyway. Your best bet to have a bug free evening outside is to buy a screened gazeebo, but then that will negate your campfire pretty much. If you're in the woods or near swamps, then the bugs will be around you 24/7. In the woods you'll even have to contend with horse flies or deer flies that can litterally take a chunk out of you. At a campground that's in cleared areas, the bugs should be at a minimum or vanished during daylight hours, but oh the nights! Smoke pots or a series of mosquito coils are what worked best for us when we'd have to endure an evening ball game for my kids during the summer. The past 13 years that I worked in the lower arctic and around Hudson Bay during the summer months, I have to say that I have never experienced mosquitos in the numbers like I saw there. We referred to them as Nunavut F-16s and bug suits were the order of the day. I even saw the Inuit wearing those suits when the bugs got bad. Diamond Archer 01
Our thermacell worked pretty good on the little suckers the other night!!!

Strut10
So it would be possible that a light or two (whehter it be a bug zapper or just a light) placed away from the camp area a bit might tend to draw some of the little ba...., err, I mean, buggers away?? MikeHammelton
Any best bug zappers to take it with myself? I heard about bug zapper rocket but really don't imagining how it work. I find here some good device. Venator bug zapper bulb has 3 modes, which work consistently: Turn On a light switch - It is the first mode - “Light + Zapper”. You will see white and blue color lights. To switch to the the second mode “Zapper”, Turn OFF and then Turn ON the light switch. You will see blue color lights. If you want to use “Only light” mode, then Turn OFF and then Turn ON the light switch again. You will see white color lights. It won’t bother you in your sleep: When an insect touches the electric grid, you will hear a quiet crack that won’t wake you up.
