Jorden
This was my uncles third year turkey hunting and up until now he hadnt gotten anything or even had any birds close. Well that all changed this year... My uncle lives in Madison and our hunting land is two hours north. He works a lot so he doesnt get a chance to hunt the whole five days so usually he will go up for a weekend hunt. It just so happens this year that my last day of class was the day before he was going up to hunt so he asked me if I would come up and call for him. This also worked out well because I just got a new video camera and was eager to try it out in the field. This would be the first time we would hunt together so we went up on thursday night and planned on going out the next morning. Well friday morning we headed out about 5:30 which we thought was a good time because it was cloudy out so it was still relatively dark out so we though we would be good. We got to one of our fields when we heard a gobble so I got out my owl call to try and get a better fix on where they were. It sounded like they were on the opposite end of the field still roosted back in the woods so we thought we would try and sneak up and set up up there. As we got closer however, we could see that they werent up in the trees but along the edge of the field so we quick darted into the woods. We were still probably 150 yards away from them so I tried calling to them but not too much because I didnt want the hens to take the toms the other way. They gobbled a few times but eventually made their way through the woods to the other field where it sounded like they hooked up with some more birds. We took this opportunty to sneak through the woods along to field to get closer to where they went through to the other field. Their pattern had been roosting in the one field then going back and forth between the two fields so I took the chance that they would come back to the field we were on so we set up near the trail where they went in. After we got set up I called a few times and could tell that they were in the other field. After I called a few more times they shut up so I did the same. After a little while longer I heard I few clicks behind us. I knew they were close but I couldnt turn to look because I was against a tree. My uncle however was infront of me and at an angle where he could see them coming. Two hens came out first and didnt want much to do with the decoy so they went the other way. The first tom, which was a hog, circled away from us. After that a jake came out to investigate the decoy. My uncle was all ready to shoot him but I told him to wait because I could see that another tom was coming in to run him off. As you can see the rest is history...and we were only out there for an hour!! Brants first bird. 23lbs, 9 1/2 inch beard, 1 and 1 1/8 inch spurs. Awesome bird. Heres the video...my first time ever filming a hunt...id say it worked out pretty well.
