Hunt or be Hunted
OK so my mom and sister was on there way home from shopping. Got off the ramp and it started jerking really bad and was down shifting and the transmission was missing really bad. Its a 99 Doodge Care Van. What do you think could be wrong with it? Because i am not a mechanic at all lol.
Wobbly_Alaska
sounds like a bad tranny... how often is the fluid checked in it? did it stop acting up when she got off the ramp? if so i could just be low fluid..... if it is still doing it... probably worse then that... unfortuanlty those older vans cost more to have it rebuilt then they are worth sometimes. Shaun_300
I agree with Vince, if it has been acting like this for a while the tranny is probably smoked. Dodge Caravan's were really bad for transmission issues. Check the fluid and if it's low add some and see what happens. But if it's been low for a while it's more than likely toast. Automatic transmissions are used hydraulically to apply clutches and bands, the transmission fluid acts as hydraulic fluid. If low fluid pressure is present for any amount of time, the more the clutches and bands slip inside. Basically the same as riding the clutch in a standard, or driving with your foot half on the brake. If the fluid is black, she's cooked. If you want to put money into it, getting a used one installed is probably the cheapest route. If you want it rebuilt make sure you either take it to a dealer, or a shop that specializes in automatic transmissions. I've taken transmissions apart that other shops have had apart and tried to fix and it isn't pretty, looks like they were taken to a butcher shop. Hunt or be Hunted
We found out what was wrong with it. It was the Shifting Colenoid (Sp?) So glad it was not the tranny. We have had this van since 2000 and had to have a new tranny 2 times. But we are now looking for a new car. gonna be getting one hopefully in the next month. brad dryden
Check fluid sounds like it may be getting hot I had a truck that I was pulling a heavy load up step hills and it was acting up where it was getting hot.
