is the 19.99 a good price for the unit and 3 refills?

Not around here. They are about $9 for refills.

I do love my Thermocell. I was hunting some swampland in October and could see a wall of skeeters around me, but none of them were coming in.

It really works the way it says. The only problem is when you are walking or if the wind is blowing they don't work as well. Of course if the wind is blowing hard enough the skeeters won't be around.

I think 20 bucks is a good deal for the Unit and the 3 refills. I have a Thermacell w/ holster and it's really handy to have in those warm season hunts. I use mine mainly in Spring Gobbler season, but have also used it on those early season archery hunts.

Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Do they also work on black flys and those little gnats? How do they work? Is it a scent driven system, or sonic or what? How long do the refills last under constant use?

You guys are getting me interested. When guys from down south start claiming they have a cure for bugs, I pay attention .....lol.

I hunt in Fl. swampland. I Will NOT go in the woods during bow season and turkey season without one! They work great for mosquitoes and have saved many a hunting trip when I would have been run out of the stand. The jury is still out on the black flies and gnats though. It seems hit or miss on those to me.

Fire it up when you start toward your stand, by the time you get there it will be heated and dispersing well. Usually takes about 10 minutes for it to start working good.

I've experimented with it going out and not turning it on and started getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, turned it on and within 10 minutes or so not one bite. I'm a believer!

I just wish I could find a deal on the butane and pads, I may be experimenting with my own concoction shortly.

I'm heading out today to get one. It may help working out in the garden. I'm still a bit concerned about the black flies and gnats because right now they are the prime offenders. I'll see what the package says.

Too late ....... I already bought it. They claim on there package that it is for both mosquitos and black flies. But then who ever accused manufacturers of being totally honest ...... lol.

Well, maybe I'll get a chance to try it out today.

Don't know about the black flies, but they DO NOT work for deer flies or horse flies. Not sure about gnats, have not noticed gnats around when using the thermacell. Not very effective in use while walking either which is when the pesky deer flies seem to be the worse.

And yes it is scent/chemical driven. There is a warning as well not to use the thermacell in confined areas where there is not sufficient circulation, have wondered about using it in our ground blind. Imagine the thermacell chemicals are known carcinogens in the state of Californa. The pads last approximately 4 hours and the butane cartridges last for about 3 pads.
