Who to believe... I called the DNR. downtown headquarters (Indianapolis). They told me that you may get 3 birds a year.. But according to the DNR website, you may only take 2 birds a year... I believe the website is correct... You may only get 2 birds a year ..1 in the spring....1 in the fall....anybody know how to hunt these birds in the falll?????? I DO grin.giflaugh.gifcool.gif

Either way it's going to be fun just to have the opportunity! I'm so glad it has finally come to this. I saw 9 birds this morning scratching in a soy bean field. A couple of them had really thick beards. Beautiful!

Matthew.

Everything I've been reading to this date says you will get to take one bird in the fall. You pick, male or female, bow or gun.

Also, the spring regs have always said that you can take "one bearded or male turkey". Making bearded hens very legal.

What will be interesting in regards to the fall season will be to see what counties they designate as qualifying for a season. Unless you live in one of the "hot" southern counties, I would not get too excited about it yet. Heck, I live in probably the best northern county, but I would not hold my breath that we will have a fall season this year. I hope I'm wrong.

I have to say that I am totally opposed to a fall firearms turkey season, which is right in the middle of the best deer hunting time of year.....

I am absolutely disgusted by it. Can you imagine what this will do to the deer? I can. It'll be just like opening day of firearms deer season...... deer will be running for their lives.... crazy.gif

At first I was in 100% agreement with you. But I've had a lot of time to reflect on it and I personally don't think it will matter much at all. There might be a few areas that see some pressure, but for the most part I don't think you'll even notice the turkey hunters.

I think the vast majority of fall turkeys will fall to archers who are actually on the stand deer hunting. I know that is what my goal will be for fall hunting, if one walks by while deer hunting, then I'll sling an arrow.

I don't think you'll see a lot of gun action. What little there will be will end up a one shot deal. A far cry from the 5 fast rounds that you hear opening morning of deer fire arms season.

Besides, I've hunted a long time in the spring and I've not seen deer running for thier lives then, and there are a lot more gun hunters in the woods chasing birds then there will be in the fall.

Heck, duck season is in here during prime bow hunting and it effects the deer movement in now way at all. I know, because I often duck hunt in the mornings and then deer hunt the same area in the evening. I always see pleanty of deer.

I'd bet the most gun hunting will occure on public ground in the southern part of the state, but I don't think it will be as much as some are predicting.

Keep an open mind. The first season will tell a lot about what is to come in the future.

Be safe out there!

BHD,

I get what you're saying. I fully intend to fling an arrow at any turkey that gets in range during deer season. I just am not looking forward to shotguns in the woods, a full month before they used to be. Don't get me wrong, I am not against turkey hunting, or deer hunting with guns. I love it. It's just that the main reason I got into bow hunting was that the deer felt little to no pressure.....

I hope I'm wrong in my predictions..... But, I'm still predicting running deer.

Re: It\'s official 3 turkey seasons in Indiana

I am a big time fall firearm turkey hunter ( i grew up in Missouri) and i love to bow hunt as well. I can see the first and maybe even the second year of fall firearms season being very busy in the woods. I can see the people who bow hunt on public land wont like sight of us pounding the woods in search of a flock and buzzing bye their treestand. After the first year or 2 the amount of tags sold will drop dramatically for the fall firearm season. Why? The actoin of the spring compared to the fall is like night and day.

The fall firearm season is for the diehard turking hunters only .....

Quick fact.... Missouri fall of 2002... harvest...16,635 birds

Missouri spring 2003...harvest...58,421 birds

Directly from the IDNR website.

Wild Turkey

Spring

April 27, 2005- May 15, 2005 1 bearded or male turkey per season

Fall - Archery*

Oct. 1, 2005 - Oct. 23, 2005 One bird of either sex per hunter each fall

Fall - Firearm*

Oct. 19, 2005 - Oct. 23, 2005 One bird of either sex per hunter each fall

* Areas for fall turkey seasons will be determined after 2005 spring turkey harvest

No more than one bird of either sex may be taken in the fall turkey season, regardless of method

------------------------------

"No more than one bird of either sex may be taken in the fall turkey season, regardless of method"

This statement straight from the website looks pretty clear to me as to how many fall birds may be harvested.

The rumor has been that the fall seasons will most likely be in the southern half of the state on private land only.

We'll have to wait till mid summer for more details.
