Turkeygirl
Ok, so this gobbler I've been after has been roosting on this one ridge all week. So my next plan is to go to the landowner's house, or at least where I think they live, and ask if I can hunt their land there....Never really gone and asked before, lol. Hopefully being female and a local helps the fact. Any suggestions? My plan is to say "Hi my name is Ruth, I live over on..........I'm turkey hunting and was wondering if I could hunt on your property over here, this week and next week? It will only be myself." Then give em one of my smiles, lol;)
redkneck
Hopefully that's all it takes Ruth, or at least that's what I've done in the past. Also follow up if you kill one by taking one of the breast halves and slicing it up and putting it into a big ziplock bag and offering it to them later, and you'll seal the deal in case a bird is there next spring. Worked well for me! Edited May 19, 2010 by redkneck
PotashRLS
Your plan for asking sounds good. If you do get permission, get them a gift certificate to a local restaurant or a package of fresh fish fillets.

Don't go over there in your camo (unless your locals wear camo all the time). Brush your hair and teeth. :camera:
Goinghuntin
I always try to chat 'em up for a few minutes first, to let both parties get acquainted. Then I ask. And yeah, wear casual clothes. Some guys say to bring a box of donuts or something, but I never have. Good luck Nathan

Turkeygirl
LOL! I'm just going as myself, wearing some casual clean clothes, all showered, not decked out in camo, lol. My sister groomed one of the grandkid's dogs a little while ago...maybe that'll help as well, lol

Ohiobucks
Skip all of that Ruth. What yo need to do is find a friend that has access to tons of land and mooch off of them. Hey, it works for some..... :1eye:
Ethan Givan
My plan is to say "Hi my name is Ruth, I live over on..........I'm turkey hunting and was wondering if I could hunt on your property over here, this week and next week? Dont try to suck up too much because it will be obvious what your doing, and If I was a landowner I wouldnt like it. Ive went door to door in the past asking for permission to hunt. I shook their hand, introduced myself, told them where I lived, and then just asked them point blank if I could hunt. Some say no, and some say sure have at it. I always bring them some of the meat if I kill game on their property too.
Turkeygirl
Well I got the ok to hunt:) Went up, lady answered, said it was fine with her, asked her husband and he said it was fine. They are already familiar with us anyway, so not like I was some total stranger. I offered to bring them some fresh chicken eggs or turkey meat if I get one, she said no, that's fine, lol. Did not want anything in return. I'll still likely drop off at least some fresh eggs at some point! Will go up tonight and hope he's roosting there and not the other side of the road. There's an old trail to walk in on so it's just a matter of the gobbler being in the same roost area tonight.

Turkeygirl
I just told my mom when I told her I got the ok, I said "If you saw how big this gobbler is, you'd be knocking on doors to!" lol

ruttinbuc
Gees oh whiz, I wish it was that easy around here. buckee
Way to go Ruth. It's always exciting to get permission on a new chunk of land. Maybe they'll let you hunt deer there as well. All the best getting that Turkey you've had your eye on. Go get em.

swohiodave
Just be honest and ask nicely. The worst that can happen is that they say no, but if they do ask if you can leave a contact number incase they change their mind and i bet they will call you back.
