I don't get to groundhog hunt as much as I used to, but this weekend I have made up for lost time. Sitting through intermittent but heavy showers I did end up taking 3 groundhogs out of a potato patch. The potatos had just started coming up and the groundhogs are really rough on them. It's amazing how much damage these little guys can do.

I took this one first in between the showers.

Taken with my NEF 223 at about 100 yards.

Good fun!!

I used to do a ton of groundhog shooting. No time for it anymore. Most of the ones I shoot now are the ones that were unfortunate enough to take up residency in sight of my front porch.

I've eliminated two so far this spring. 5mm slug to the noggin does the job right nicely.

I don't know if it's good or bad in the long run, but I've never had a huntable population of those things around here. I don't know why some fields and fencelines have them and some don't, but there's never been a whole lot of them around here.

Anyway, I pop them whenever and wherever I get the chance. :D

Nice shooting.

Thought of this thread on my way home from my daughter's friend's today. Got to an intersection and noticed two animals in the middle of the road. At first it looked like two ground hogs, but then it kinda' looked like maybe two beagles because their tails were up wagging.

Turns out, it was two ground hogs. They were nose to nose, all bristled up, fighting. LOL. Funniest thing I've ever seen those stupid animals do. One of them headed for the ditch as I inched the truck closer, the other one headed right for the truck. My daughter tried to get a pic of them with her phone, but couldn't for some reason, so I drove on thinking I was going to hit the one, but he/she escaped I guess because I didn't hear or feel any thump.

:D

Kinda the same here too.... a few around but not many.

I bet it would be fun! Nice work!

Those little guys are a pain in the butt. My dad has got three holes inside his barn now and they're all over. I've been getting a couple just about every weekend now. At noon I have to stop turkey hunting, but around then it's the perfect time to hunt woodchucks/ground hogs. I think the count is at 11 here. Before now it's been a harder time though. Hay fields are finally starting to get cut, so despite the chucks being in holes located in brushy edges and thick woods edges of fields, you can now catch them moving around. I'm surprised the showers didn't keep them in their holes all together. They really hate to get wet.
