Jorden
I am looking for a little advice on what to plant. I have a food plot in our woods that is between 1/4 and 1/2 an acre in size and I am struggling to figure out what to plant on it. Last year I planted WI Secret Spot and it worked really well but this year I wanted something that would provide summer nutrition as well as good fall attraction. What has worked well for you guys or what would you recommend?
wtnhunt
We have done ok with beans here in smaller plots, I know others suggest not using them in mini plots due to browsing pressure, but our density is not that high that we get overbrowsing and we have gotten away with planting 1/4 to 3/4 acre bean and bean mix plots and had them do just fine. Might consider something like lablab plus with sorghum in the mix if you have a high density. Have had really good results out of the lablab plus in 1/4 acre plots. Another consideration might be eagle seeds RR soybeans, I would not hesitate to plant a half acre of RR eagle seeds forage beans here, they do quite well and will handle browsing pressure well too. brad dryden
Soybeans work well. They tear into my beans on the farm and they hit them year round.
PotashRLS
Remember that with Wisconsin's growing season, grains must go in now in order to have a standing crop in the fall. Once a frost hits late planted beans, peas, etc. it is all over but the stems. I think that a single plot in the 1/4 to 1/2 acre size is difficult to use as both summer nutrition and fall attraction. If your soil is good, plant half in clover and the other half now in beans or wait and put in winter greens or no plow or the equivalent. It is crucial to rotate brassicas from year to year to get their full potential.
dogdoc
1/4 to 1/2 an acre doesn't give beans or peas much of a chance. I think you would have better luck planting in clover and then overseeding later summer with a cereal grain.

Overseed with rye and/or oats
