Turkeygirl
Or something! I sneak down the trail this morning, find a tree to sit against, well hidden. He gobbles, right where I want him from! I'm figuring he'll either land on the down side of the trail, right in front of me, or up hill. Well at almost 6 he flies down afetr a hen goes down, he's on the trail to my left about 40 yards up, strutting and showing off. Hens are feeding. I manage to pivot around my tree to face his direction. Next thing I know...and this is bizarre. He suddenly stops strutting, runs forward, kicks at something, flaps and jumps up in the air over whatever it was, lands, turns and runs down over the bank with his hens! What the!!?????:jaw: No idea what happened....Maybe a fox or something was sneaking up on them? the hens were making a racket from the trees and ground this morning? Or some other critter? I hope he didn't get too spooked....I was oh so close...argh. Guess I'll see if he's back there tonight and try again....

Ravin R10 man
You need to get a gun that will shoot well out past 40 yds....that should be a dead bird period.

Turkeygirl
Well today I wasn't about to pop a shot through some twigs and hope to get lucky....Wounding or spooking him isn't worth it...and I'm quite happy with my 20 ga:)
ruttinbuc
Do what is best for you and the situation at the time, Ruth. Patience and getting him close is what it is all about.
Ohiobucks
You need to get a gun that will shoot well out past 40 yds....that should be a dead bird period. Not the answer IMO. My son, who is 15, shoots a 20 gauge. He is more comfortable with that gun than he is with a 12. When hunting with a 20 gauge, you shoot targets that are within range of that gun. Ruth has killed birds with her 20 gauge, even a jake bird this spring. To some, it is about the hunt, not just the kill. "that should be a dead bird period." Come on, really Martin?
Ravin R10 man
OH yes REALLY...even with a 20 ga.
Slash
Well today I wasn't about to pop a shot through some twigs and hope to get lucky....Wounding or spooking him isn't worth it...and I'm quite happy with my 20 ga:) Definitely use whatever you're comfortable with. I think that extra reach that you can get with a 12ga and a good choke are proper when hunting turkeys, those things are smart and just when you think you got them pegged or think you know what they're going to do, they swoop back to the south behind you and you'll never see them again. :jaw:. Good luck, hope you get him soon
