redkneck
i dont like antler restrictions you purchase your tag you should be able to shoot what makes you happy. A spotted fawn? A button buck? Do you advocate no restriction whatsoever? I believe restrictions are to the benefit of the herd when decisions are made with good data and sound judgment, like I think our state has done. I think in time hunter satisfaction is going to go up because of more quality and older deer, rather than dissuade new hunters from the sport. Just an opinion. These A/R threads always start spirited debates.
Doc
It's real hard to predict exactly what the short term and the long-term effects of AR will be. There's so much arguing even between so-called experts. About the only real concern that I have over the whole deal is just how it will impact hunter numbers in areas that are traditionally hurting for deer numbers. A lot of us are enjoying some pretty good sized deer herds right now and we are feeling pretty confident these days that we can have the luxury of picking and choosing. But it must be remembered that there still are areas where getting ANY deer is quite an achievement because of poor habitat (Mature forests) and traditional winter-kill areas. I'm not sure just how well received having AR jammed down the throats of hunters in those areas really will be, and how many will just call it quits if we try to frustrate them out of the woods with excessive regulation that their hunting grounds are not suited for. Just wanted to make sure I understood your post above. Shooting a spotted fawn will surely leave that 150 to walk out on you this year, but it may have been the 150 in three more years. I understand your position, but I'm glad my state is trying to protect them, I really think it's better for every hunter here in the long run. mikebohio
were gonna half to disagree on this redneck I honestly cant see how a spotted fawn being killed adversely affects the herd. yes it may be a monster some day but it also could be a cull buck. keeping good genetics is the only way imo to improve the number of quallity bucks and i cant see how you can do that with antler restrictions. please dont get me wrong i surely wouldnt do it myself. i value my tags and will only use them on quallity deer.
