wtnhunt
Front axle on my kubota started leaking gear oil from the bottom of it, gotta be a bad seal. Looks like it should not be too bad to get to, but not sure what kind of gears I would be getting into to replace that bottom seal, may try to post up some pics. 98 model so it is long out of warranty and not planning to haul it to the shop. Really did not need to have a problem with it right now.
Shaun_300
Not too sure William, is it a differential like a truck? Should be able to give you an idea when I see a pic.
wtnhunt
Not too sure William, is it a differential like a truck? Should be able to give you an idea when I see a pic. It is a 4wd model tractor Shaun, front left axle has two bolts at the top that look like they come out letting the pivot drop out the bottom once that top is removed, just not sure what kind gears are inside if they stay in place if pulling that bottom end off is more involved than just jacking the axle up and letting it out the bottom and replacing the leaking seal. Guessing there is probably a retaining ring in there somewhere and probably a short length of axle.
redkneck
Looks like fun William How much does it leak? I've been pouring grease in a bush hog for years now! (I got a lot of free grease ) I've never worked on a 4x4 tractor any. There are some great tractor forums out there though and you might even get lucky and find a DIY post a user made on the same repair..... those are great! Good luck with it! Just started leaking yesterday John. Will try a search and see what comes up, if nothing else I can ask the service desk guy at the dealer and see if he can print me off a parts sheet, that would help. Going to have to get in there to get the seal anyway.
redkneck
http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=92228 I've gotten a lot of good stuff there for the lawn mower and tractor. Maybe you can get a little insight there.
Ravin R10 man
Its not a wheel seal..second look it not the main axle seal either ,.thats to the right.... looks like its leaking when it pivots while you turn...could be an axle turn assembly seal ...parts man may be able to help, but Id go in back and talk to the mechanics that actually work on them. Could be a fracture or ecsessive wear on the joint. I dont know alot about a Kabota Edited May 30, 2010 by Mathews XT Man

I dont know alot about a Kabota Pretty sure its just a seal Martin, not sure the exact terminology of what that section of the axle is called, but you are correct about it leaking from the pivot point. I have actually had to have one of those seals replaced once before while the tractor was still under warranty.
Ethan Givan
I have actually had to have one of those seals replaced once before while the tractor was still under warranty. hmmm sounds like Kabota might have some issues there that need to be corrected. Seals shouldnt go bad that often. I have never worked on a 4 wheel drive tractor so I dont know the answer to your question but I dont see how it could be real complicated. I would just go talk to the dealer.
wtnhunt
hmmm sounds like Kabota might have some issues there that need to be corrected. Seals shouldnt go bad that often. Maybe. That was probably about 10 years ago and it was in warranty and they fixed it then. Guess how long seals last probably depends on type of use. redkneck
Guess how long seals last probably depends on type of use. Yep. Heavy mud will work on seals bad, just ask my truck
wtnhunt
Yep. Heavy mud will work on seals bad, just ask my truck Makes sense, I probably should do a bit better job of keeping the mud cleaned off. Use the loader quite a bit too, lots of weight/stress gets put on the front end.
archerjg
I have worked on Grandma's Massey Ferguson that is 4wd and it is very similar to that setup on the Kubota. Your best bet is to go see the dealer and see if you can get the exploded parts diagram first. I know when we pulled the wheel off of Grandma's we had to pretty much disassemble the hub to get to the seal. The only gears we really had to contend with were the ring and pinion gear for the 4wd. You may have to take the steering arm off and your hub may just come off with a few bolts the diagram would be the easiest way to tell. I know when we got into the Grandma's there was a ton of grit into it from the mud and that is what destroyed the seal. We have to replace those seals about every two to three years. Good Luck doesn't appear to be that bad right now, but you never know until you get into it. Archerjg
wtnhunt
Closest kubota dealer wants $56 before tax for the seal. Said it was a common part to be replaced and from what he said when he pulled up the parts sheet looks like it comes out from the bottom, has a short axle inside and all is supposed to drop out the bottom as an assembly after removing a snap ring. Does not look like too difficult a repair, but think I am going to hold off on getting into it until after I am done with the house and just keep an eye on the gear oil level for now.
