toddyboman
So when I back up my truck it sounds as if someone is jumping on an old set of box springs......Weird squeaking sound. It this a suspension thing, something in the rear end? IT only makes the sound when I back up....... Thanks!
TBow
Just stop backing up then! I took my truck to a garage where a friend worked and mentioned to him I was concerned about a loud clunking noise in the front end. He indicated he could resolve that in a matter of seconds. At that point he leaned in through the driver's window, reached across to the radio controls and turned the radio up really loud. "There", he said. "Problem solved! You won't hear that sound anymore". I'd pull the wheels and check the brakes first. TBow
Shaun_300
Does it start slow then speed and get louder as you go faster? Sounds like a U-joint starting to seize up. Sometimes they'll squeak forwards and backwards, sometimes one or the other. All depends which bearing in them is gone.
toddyboman
Not the brakes. It sounds like.....remember the OLD box springs that was under your mattress that squeaked like crazy when you jumped on them as a kid......that is what it sounds like as I back up... Not sure really shaun....Have to try and go backwards faster I guess
Shaun_300
I'm pretty sure it's a U-joint Todd. I was trying to find a youtube video to let you compare but I can't find the one I'm looking for. It's like a high pitched squeaky creaky noise.

Shaun_300
Yup, probably a U-joint. Cheap fix if that's what it is. Usually around $25-50 for the U-joint and about an hour labour to change it.
toddyboman
planning on going to part store and getting new u-joint and fixing it over the weekend.... Thanks for your help!
Shaun_300
I can't 100% guarantee it's a U-joint Todd. 90% sure though, if you could get a video of it I could tell you if it was or wasn't. Also if you've never changed one, I'd be taking it to a shop to let them do it, they're kind of tricky if you've never changed one. Especially if you have an aluminum driveshaft. First thing they're gonna ask you at the parts store is which joint you need. If your truck is 4x4 you have 4 of them. It'd be one on the rear shaft for sure, some trucks the front and rear joints are the same, some aren't. So really you have to pull your driveshaft out to check them. If you've changed them before and are mechanically inclined, go for it! What kind of truck do you have? I think it's a Silverado if I remember right. Shaun_300
I'd rather recommend that than say, go ahead and do it, it's easy! Then have him bend his $1200 driveshaft. A lot cheaper for a shop to do it sometimes. I just did one on a 2008 Sierra 4x4 shortbox yesterday, the main part of the u-joint is so big you can't do it the old way now, couldn't get the caps to come more than 1/2 way out of the shaft then the main part was hitting the inside of the shaft, no more room! Had to cut the center of it out with the oxy-acetylene torch and then punch the caps out. :jaw:
