Re: Really Confused Now :(

It's a tough choice. I have both and both have their good points and bad points. Take a quarter and say "heads = 870 and tails = 835" best 2 out of 3 wins. If the gun is mainly for turkeys, I would go for the Mossberg 835 again (why I bought it in the first place) due to the largest bore on the market. Get yourself a good aftermarket choke and some good ammo an dyou are ready to slay the birds.

Re: Really Confused Now :(

Hands down, the 870. Why? Well, to be quite honest I'm a little biased because the 870 was the first gun I ever shot, and I have 2 of them now, and I shot them when I was in the service (the riot version-- cool.gif).

My buddy has an 835, and to me, it's just a clunkier gun, it just feels cheaper than the Remington.

Don't flame me, that's just my opinion.

Re: Really Confused Now :(

My vote is for the 835. I bought one when they first came out, still have it and loving it. I plan to put a slug barrel on that one as I bought another 835 Grand Slam Turkey model. I had an 870 and sold it prior to buying the turkey model. They are both good guns, but I'm just a Mossberg man.

I also have an Encore with the turkey barrel that I like, but if I was to own one shotgun, it would be the Mossberg.

remington all the way.....i have 5 of them & never had a problem with any of them. a buddy of mine had the mossberg & his safety broke off of the top of the gun twice. i like the remington safety myself.....jmo

Both are good guns, i prefer the 870 it just feels better too me, not so cheap. Slugger you need a tighter choke then a .665 i'd go with .655 its gunna do you alot better.

AJ,

What choke and shells you shooting in you 835?

[/ QUOTE ]

I used my 835 to bag my first turkey. I used a Federal 3.5" load of copper plated #5s. The choke was a Hastings or Carlson, I don't remember. Now, its set up for waterfowl. I use my 11-87 Super Mag for turkeys as it kicks less (semi auto).

Re: Really Confused Now :(

I am planning on getting a 835 before the season starts, but not sure if I want to get a 24" or 28" barrel. What barrel length did you get?

I will mainly be using the gun for turkey, but my dad would also take it pheasant hunting with him, so I am thinking about the 28" barrel, but not sure yet.

Re: Really Confused Now :(

By the time you hear the noise from the pump on the Mossberg, it's already too late for that bird grin.gif

I own an 870 that I use strictly as a slug gun for deer, and an 835 that I use for turkey. Why? Because IMO and from the testing I did with them, the Mossberg is a much better turkey gun and the 870 is a much better deer gun. Hope this helps!
