Smoking Bans....your thoughts?

This may have been talked about already but....

As of July 5th this year, a statewide smoking ban is going into effect here in WI. It will make it illegal to smoke in bars/taverns, as well as some other restrictions.

While I (as a non smoker) love the idea of not waking up with a sore throat and smelling like a ashtray after a nite out, I think it is complete B.S. that tavern owners are having this law forced upon them!!!

What are your thoughts on this..??

I don't frequent that scene anymore, but I do really appreciate the smoking bans in restaurants.

I actually like the smell of a good cigar if I'm outside. And, curiously, I don't mind smelling the smoke off of my dad's cigarettes if we're outside. Probably because he used to occasionally puff on one when we went fishing, hunting or played football when I was a kid.

Like Chris I like the smell of a good Cigar or even a Pipe. However, I think the ban is overall a good thing because of second hand smoke.

I smoked for years but only at gigs and other events where others were smoking. It didnt seem like that big of a deal back then but with what we know about second hand smoke now days im sure I did my fair share of damage to others.

The thing about cigarettes (unlike smokeless) is that it kills others too.

I don't smoke but I think it is crap that the government is telling people what they can and can't do. Smoking is a legal activity last time I checked. Plus the tobacco companies are some of the biggest corporations in the country. Considering the state of the economy do we really think it is a good idea to put a whole bunch more people out of work.

I heard a news story that they are considering banning smoking in your own home if you have children under the age of 16 in the house.

They have been after our guns for years and we have been pretty successfull at keeping the government out of our buisness. However, everytime we allow the government to regulate one group it makes it that much easier to regulate the next one. So whats next. Will they outlaw cheese burgers, cause there is too much fat and it is unhealty and plugs our arteries.

Come on people, we need to get the government out of our buisness. I'm fine with no smoking sections in resturants and bars. Let the smokers have their rights.

If you like to smoke I'm pretty sure there is a document that says this country was founder with the intention to allow all free men to persue happiness.

Please no extreme resposes saying "does that mean we have to allow pedafiles to persue their happiness" and similar statements. Lets have common sense rule the day for once.

Grew up with both parents smoking and cannot stand to be around smoke, but also figure smoking goes along with drinking in bars so not so sure how a ban in bars would work in those places. Would be nice though to see bans in public places like the fronts of restaurants and stores that was actually enforced. Kind of irritating walking in a place with the kids and having to walk through a cloud where smokers have to get in their last puffs.

I hate coming home smelling like an ashtray as well but I hate the fact that the big brother is regulating us even more. As a business owner I would be furious about this and I know many that are. It should be the choosing of the owner if they want to go smoke free or not. Nobody is forced to go into a bar or restaurant and even employees can quit if they don't like it. There are plenty of non-smoking options out there now a days and we don't need more regulations imposed on us.

I love it! This just went into effect at the beginning for May here in Michigan. No more smelling like smoke at the end of the night, heck even after going in during the day just for lunch at a bar. I have a friend that owns a bar and the first few weeks the ban was in effect was one of their busiest, most profitable times. It doesn't seem to hurt his business any so I don't think he minds not smelling like smoke at the end of the day either. :)

I dont smoke but I do not agree with the bans. I do not think its the governments right to force people to do this. Especially in bars or taverns. That is a privately owned business and the owners should be in charge of what people are allowed and not allowed to do in there. Just another way our government tightens its grip on us, little by little.

Amen brother! I am not a smoker either, but I think it should be up to the business owner to say if they want people smoking there or not. If there is a place that allows smoking and you don't like it, then don't go there. If it ends up costing them money then I'm sure they would eventually change to non smoking. As for bars and taverns...let's see, I've been to a few in my time and still visit them occasionally. A few things I've noticed in bars... people drinking alcohol, getting into fights, trying to pick up chicks( and visa versa), gambling, but no smoking aloud...that would just be way too much.:eat:

Been that way in MS for a while. Heck I'm still a smoker and I don't have a problem with it. I don't smoke in my own house because I don't want it smelling like smoke. We don't allow smokers to smoke in our hunting camp either. Outside is fine but not inside. I like it that way. I never smoked in a restaurant and I didn't like sitting next to a table of smokers either while I'm trying to enjoy a fine meal. Glad they passed the law here.

I don't agree with the government forcing things on people either. I smoked for most of my adult life and never gave a thought to how putrid cigarette smoke really was. A short while after I quit 11 years ago this month (?) I had to meet a friend at a local bar to collect some money he owed me. I no sooner walked in and the reek was incredible. :jaw:

And to think it never bothered me in the hundreds of times I have been in the place before rehab.

On one hand I don't agree with the government forcing businesses, mainly bars, to ban smoking from their facility. From restaurants and other public buildings like malls and stores I see the point. But a lot of people who go to bars that drink, smoke as well. Beer and smoking go together almost like coffee and smoking. Businesses who are forced to ban smoking will lose a lot of business for the first while. Ontario has been a "smoke free" for many years, at least 5-6 years. No smoking in any public accessed building. No smoking within 9 meters of any entrance or exit. This includes overhangs. If there's an overhang of 20 feet from the building you still have to be 9 meters away from the overhang. No smoking in vehicles with kids under 16 years of age. And in this town and many others who have passed the bylaw, no smoking in any public recreation areas and parks. If you go down to our fish and game/yacht club where the boat launch is on the Ottawa River, you cannot smoke anywhere on the property. That, I think is ridiculous. But most smokers have got over the fact they can't smoke in the bars, they still go, but just go outside to smoke.

i do like not having to smell it sometimes but I am not sure i like the idea that the government is telling businesses what they can and cannot do in their establishments. I do not smoke but I think it should be up to the business owner. If they decide they want to have smoking and you don't like it then do not go to that establishment. Go to one that decides to stay smoke free. The state government is starting with saying you cant smoke in public places... whats next, no drinking in public places at all? I see a fine line that is being walked.

It has been that way in CT for close to 10 years. I am not a smoker, but I had mixed feelings about it. As a non smoker, I can say I do love going into a resturant, and it being smoke free. I didn't realize how much I appreciated it until we went into a resturant in PA a few years ago and were asked if we wanted smoking ot non smoking....it doesn't really matter. If someone is smoking in a small enclosed area, everyone gets the results ofthe smoker.

The bar and tavern owners in CT were up in arms about it here when it went into effect. I haven't seen a bar close because of it. A lot of the bars opened "patios" that were outside where drinks could be served and people could smoke.

A big part of me likes it, but another part of me hates it because I wonder what they( goverment) is going to attempt to control next.
