redkneck
I hate to judge other parents, but can't fathom somebody sending their 16 year old daughter on a trip around the world. When does that become child endangerment?
texastrophies
All I got to say about this is, my son turns 16 in a couple of weeks and I worry about sending him to the store.
m gardner
She's probably better trained and tougher then most men. Training people to be safe and having the state enforce it has lead us to where we are today. On the brink of socialism.
Guest TennesseeTurkey
Im sorry and I may take some flack for this but I htink she's flat out stupid! and so are her parents! This whole being the youngest to sail non stop around the world has became a joke, now everyone who own's a sailboat who has a kid younger than 16 who think they know how to sail is talking about trying to do it. Its dangerous point blank and not for kids.
Shaun_300
That's about as stupid as it gets right there. I'd never let my kid do that. I think it's stupid for anyone to do something like that, let alone a 16 year old kid.
redkneck
It's not about being a socialist, it's about using a little common sense. If she had made it, folks would cheer them on, if she had been raped and held for ransom by somali pirates, we'd want the parents in jail. I don't understand for the life of me how someone could be so stupid. I wonder if the Aussies are going to send them the bill for the tens of thousands they spent on saving her. Rem308
My $.02 worth: Whether she's properly trained or not, it's just not SAFE. In this case, I don't see the reward outweighing the risk. This story turned out a LOT better than how it could have ended, and I believe it made such good news because the odds were NOT in her favor. Ravin R10 man
I dont know alot about her ability or this story, but people who do this have radio & life support equipment..apparently they were all ok with it....I say more power to her! This wont be the last you see of this gal. Im not getting into wether its stupid or not..she prob is safer on the water than on our highways! Nut
I see zero difference in her sailing attempt than when I allowed my boys at 16 to be alone in the woods during shotgun or turkey season. I taught them the safe way and know they were mature enough to handle it. Toughest thing I have ever done is to allow my boys to grow into adults without trying to treat them like they were 5. Unless your woods are subject to monsoons, pirates, and you let them hunt for months on end before they came home. There's a huge difference..... IMHO.... I hunted solo with a rifle way before 16, but at least my dad could get to me if he needed to.

redkneck
Guys, I honestly meant my comments to be tongue in cheek, maybe I should have used some more smilies. Nut, I have as much respect for you as any member on the boards, I guess I assumed everyone would recognize the sarcasm there, but as we all know sometimes things crossed up when typed. Back to the issue though. In my opinion the comparison to trusting a child to hunt with a potentially lethal weapon alone for a few hours to sending a young girl away for almost half a year on her own in potentially very dangerous elements, both from nature and from other men is a stretch. There's a reason that a 16 year old child going solo around the world is newsworthy and sending a 16 year old child on a solo hunting trip is not. Again I respectfully disagree

elkoholic
The way I see this story is that it shows a total waste of resources to try to achieve a goal that serves no useful purpose. The parents should pay for the cost of search and rescue and then reckless endangerment charges should be considered.
redkneck
Well, if you read beyond the headlines, you see that dad is working on a reality show for the family, they started a clothing line hocking shoes and everything else they can put an "Abby16" logo on. I think it was a foolish venture to start with, especially when her boat was broke down barely after leaving CA and having to get some makeshift repairs in Mexico. The whole thing reeks of a commercial exploit.
gzilla45
I just read an article where the family had in fact got a "reality" based show and cameras had been in their home for a few months already. It looks like this was going to be a part of that show. While I commend her efforts for doing something few have done, it just seems the motives behind it have tainted it. It is really a sad state in our country when people are doing everything they can to get cameras to follow them around to make money. I mean, who really watches that crap? The Gosselins (sp?) and that Octo-lady are to blame for this as they started it all. Once one person starts something, everyone and their brother has to get involved. Dawg
Guess I've lost it too. I agree with Nut on this. There are some 16-18 year old teenagers that are just as mature, if not more, than a lot of adults that I know. The girl is probably better trained at sailing that boat than any member on this forum. I see no difference in a well trained qualified 40 year old doing it than a well trained qualifited 16 year old doing it. Yea there were risks for her, but those same risks would have still been there if it was an adult. Nobody slams the Captain Sid on deadliest catch for having his young son out there doing one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Whats the difference?
redkneck
Yep, you've lost it too! I don't care how mature she is, she's up against elements that are out of her control. 30-40 foot seas and a lot of other threats. Obviously she wasn't too prepared for it or else there would not have been tens of thousands spent to rescue her right? As for deadliest catch, I don't watch the show, but from your post I can see that the kid is not out alone working on deck. I'm not going to criticize that, at least he's with his dad. Just opinions folks, we all know what they're like.
Dawg
Just opinions folks, we all know what they're like. So it wouldn't be a big deal if it were a 40 year old woman? 40 foot seas are 40 foot seas regardless of what age the sailor is. If she is as qualified as an adult, what difference is there? I was wrong, it wasn't Captain Sid, it was Captain Phil. Even though the kid on DC is with adults, he still could fall off the boat and even though his dad was the skipper, there's no guarntee the kid could be rescued. There would be a greater chance, but no guarntee. The odds are always against a person regardless of age.
redkneck
The odds are always against a person regardless of age. True dat But..... when folks hit 18 (mature or not) they are a legal adult and can make stupid decisions on their own. Kids that are 16 are subject to a lot more of the parent's influence, esp one's that have a lot to gain financially from the affair.
gzilla45
One thing that bothers me about the whole thing is the timing of it. I saw a guy on TV last night talking about the fact that it is the winter in the southern hemisphere and the waters she would be crossing would be at their worst. If that is the case, why in the world would she be doing this now? Money. Pure and simple. Her dad I'm sure pushed this through to get the footage/publicity for their TV show. I'm sure she is a very capable sailor but I don't understand why they risked it if it indeed was the worst time for weather. And I just want to say that I am in no way shape or form a mariner and was just taking that guy's word for it. He could be completely wrong about it but it does make sense to me anyway.
