MNcrittergittr
Hi there, I'm looking at getting a new revolver and was interested in a little input. I want a good multi-purpose wheel gun. I mainly want it to bring with me on trips, camping, and fishing etc. But I also would like one that a guy could use deer hunting if he ever wanted to. Traditionally I've always liked .357 mags. I've shot a couple .40 cal that I really liked. I'm open to any suggestions really. I don't want anything huge and too heavy. I'm a die hard bow hunter, I have a lot of long gun experience and some hand gun experience but I'm not a pistol expert. I'd be interested to hear any suggestions. Thanks. hunterbobb
If Hunting is anywhere in the equation I would go with a Ruger Blackhawk. I have four. One in 22 LR/22 WMR (which is actually a model single six.) One in 357 Mag. One in 41 Mag. and one in 45 Long colt. The advantages of a Blackhawk are they come with adjustable sights. They are single action only which contributes to accuracey and because they are single action they are less expensive than a double action revolver. They are one of the strongest revolvers on the market. You really have to work at it to blow one up. The disadvantage is they are somewhat heavy. You may not want to carry that much weight. Some people don't like the single action and prefer double action. If you decide to go with a double action revolver. Tauraus makes a lot of good double action pistols for a reasonable price. They will be about a hundred dollars cheaper than a comparable Ruger or Smith and Wesson. Tauraus has a life time guarantee and if any thing ever goes wrong you can send it back to the factory in Florida and they will fix it for free. :2guns:
m gardner
I'd look at the Smith and Wesson N frame revolvers with a 4 or 6 inch full lug barrel in 44 mag. You can shoot 44 specials in them to practice so your arms don't go numb and they will kill the biggest deer with magnum loads. For self defense against 2 legged critters 44 specials are fine. You may be able to pick up one fairly reasonably that's in good shape because most people don't shoot them alot because of the recoil. I like S&W's over the Rugers for accuracy and double action shooting but the Ruger Blackhawks are the most rugged handgun you'll own. johnf
m gardner has some good advice there. You may want to check your state laws for barrel length requirements if you are going to hunt with it. Arkansas requires a 4" barrel. For the price of a big revolver like that you may want to look at a Glock 10mm.
AC156
I purchased a Ruger GP100 .357 magnum a few months ago and love it. It is double action and has a 4 inch barrel, so it is legal for deer hunting where I live. I believe you can get them with a stainless or blue finish. I had the intention of buying a Ruger Blackhawk with the extra cylinder that allows you to shoot 9mm rounds, but when I saw the GP100 I decided to get it since it is double action. The price was not that much more than the Blackhawk with the extra cylinder. Being chambered in .357 mag, I can also shoot .38 special rounds out of it. I would suggest checking out the GP100. HUNTINGMAN
I picked this baby up today,a blackhawk in 357 mag with a six inch barrell. It's not realy big but has what is needed. It will kill a deer and is small enough to pack fishing to.
